Zarkandar
Zarkandar (foaled 20 April 2007) is an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse who competed in National Hunt races. A half-brother to the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner Zarkava he won one of his three Flat racing, flat races before being gelded and becoming a specialist Hurdling (horse race), hurdler. He was the best juvenile hurdler of the 2010/2011 National Hunt season when he won the Adonis Juvenile Novices' Hurdle, Triumph Hurdle and Anniversary 4-Y-O Novices' Hurdle. In the following season he won the Betfair Hurdle but finished unplaced in the Champion Hurdle. In the 2012/2013 he won the Elite Hurdle, International Hurdle, Kingwell Hurdle and Aintree Hurdle, although he again ran disappointingly in the Champion Hurdle. He failed to win when campaigned over longer distances in 2013/2014 but began his next season by winning the Grand Prix d'Automne in France. Paul Nicholls (horse Racing)
Paul Frank Nicholls (born 17 April 1962) is a British National Hunt horse trainer with stables at Ditcheat, Somerset. A relatively successful jump jockey, Nicholls has become the leading National Hunt trainer of his generation, finishing the 2007–08 season with 155 winners and a record £4 million in prize money. To date, he has trained over 3000 winners, won the 2012 Grand National, four Cheltenham Gold Cups and has been crowned British jump racing Champion Trainer thirteen times. Early life The son of a policeman, Nicholls was educated at Marlwood School, Alveston before leaving at 16 to take up work in a local point-to-point yard. The Grand Prix d'Automne is a Group 1 hurdle race in France which is open to horses aged five years or older. It is run at Auteuil over a distance of 4,800 metres (about 3 miles), and it is scheduled to take place each year in late October or early November. History The race was first run in 1929 as an autumn counterpart to the Grand Prix du Printemps, a handicap race run at the same course in spring. The Grand Prix d'Automne, however, was a weight-for-age event until becoming a handicap in 1940 before reverting to weight-for-age in 1990. Azamour
Azamour (8 March 2001 – 5 April 2014) was a Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. He won four Group One races including the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes and was Europe's Champion Older Horse in 2005. At his peak, he was rated the third best thoroughbred racehorse in the world. Background Azamour was a "powerful" bay horse standing 16.2 hands high. He was bred in Ireland and raced by the Aga Khan. His sire, Night Shift, was a son Northern Dancer who is regarded as the 20th century's best sire of sires, while his dam was Asmara, a daughter of Lear Fan, a Group One winning son of Roberto. Apart from Azamour, Night Shift sired many good racehorses in a long stud career, including In the Groove, Well Chief, Lochangel, Barons Pit (Diadem Stakes) and Nicolotte (Queen Anne Stakes).
