Zako Heskija
Zako Heskija, Isaac Solomonov Heskiya, ''Зако Хеския'', also: ''Zako Heskia'' or "Sako Cheskija" (21 September 1922 – 3 June 2006) was a Bulgarian film director and screenwriter. He was born in Istanbul (Turkey) to Jewish parents. He graduated Cinema and Photograph College in Sofia. Since 1956 until 1965, he had been an assistant director in Boyana Film Studio. Heskia became in 1966 international audience for "Gorechto Pladne" (Torrid Noon), the first Bulgarian contribution to the Cannes Film Festival and a nomination for the Palme d'Or. In 1981 he won the spezial prize at the 12th Moscow International Film Festival for ''Yo Ho Ho''. Zako Heskiya worked as a leader of the group "Debut" in former Boyana Studio (succeeded by Nu Boyana Film Studios) and opened the door to professional work for many young Bulgarian film directors. ''Three Reservists'' ( bg, Тримата от запаса, translit=Trimata ot zapasa, italic=yes) is a Bulgarian comedy-drama war film released in 1971, directed by Zako Heskiya, starring Georgi Partsalev, Kiril Gospodinov and Nikola Anastasov. The winter of 1945, the First Bulgarian Army is engaged in the battles for the liberation of Hungary from the Nazis during the Second World War. Three men are sent to join the army, but they are completely unprepared and without a clear idea of warfare. They are laughable with their inability to cope with their tasks. Upon its release, the film won wide popularity. The memorable performances by Partsalev, Gospodinov and Anastasov turned their characters into favorites of the audience. Nu Boyana Film Studios ( bg, Ню Бояна Филм) are film studios situated in Sofia, Bulgaria. The film production complex was opened in 1962 and was state owned until 2005 when it was bought by one of the longest-running independent film companies in Hollywood, Nu Image and Millennium Films. ''Yo Ho Ho'' ( bg, Йо-хо-хо, italic=yes) is a 1981 Bulgarian drama film directed by Zako Heskiya and written by Valeri Petrov. It was entered into the 12th Moscow International Film Festival where it won a Special Prize. The 2006 film '' The Fall'' by Tarsem Singh is based on ''Yo Ho Ho''. Plot A 10-year-old boy with a broken arm befriends a young, paraplegic actor in the hospital. Together, the two make up a pirate story in which they play the main roles. The boy, Leonid, starts to visit the actor's room, which also houses a poor old man, every day. In the made-up story, he becomes the evil adversary of the pirates. Little by little, everyone in the hospital gets their roles in the story. Leonid is fascinated. But in order for the story to continue, the boy has to steal bottles of medicine for the actor, who no longer has any joy in life and plans a suicide.
