Zahir Mosque
The Zahir Mosque ( ms, Masjid Zahir) is a mosque in Alor Setar, Kota Setar, Kedah, Malaysia, and the state mosque of the state of Kedah. The Zahir Mosque is one of the grandest and oldest mosques in Malaysia, having been built in 1912. The Zahir Mosque has been voted as one of the top 10 most beautiful mosques in the world. History The mosque was built upon the tomb and grave of fallen Kedah warrior that die during Siamese invasion of Kedah. The design was inspired by the vision of the late Sultan Muhammad Jiwa Zainal Abidin II, who was in turn inspired by the Azizi Mosque of the Langkat Sultanate in North Sumatra. Siamese Invasion Of Kedah
The Siamese invasion of Kedah was a military operation mounted by the Kingdom of Siam against the Sultanate of Kedah in November 1821, in the area of what is now northern Peninsula Malaysia. Background The Sultanate of Kedah had been a tributary state to Siam during the Ayutthaya period, though the extent of Siamese influence over Northern Malay Sultanates varied over time. After the Fall of Ayutthaya in 1767, the Northern Malay Sultanates were freed from Siamese domination temporarily. In 1786, Francis Light managed to obtain a lease of Penang Island from Sultan Abdullah Mukarram Shah of Kedah on behalf of British East India Company in exchange for British military supports against the Siamese or Burmese. The Sultanate of Langkat () was a Malay Muslim state located in modern Langkat Regency, North Sumatra. It predates Islam in the region, but no historical records before the 17th century survive. Azizi Mosque
Azizi Mosque is a mosque located in Tanjung Pura, Langkat Regency, North Sumatra, Indonesia. It was the royal mosque of the Sultanate of Langkat. History Construction of the mosque started in 1889 following the order of Tengku Sultan Abdul Aziz, late 19th-century ruler of Langkat Sultanate, and son of Tengku Sultan Haji Musa al-Khalidy al-Muazhzham Syah. The mosque was designed by a German architect. Many of the construction workers were the Chinese inhabitant of Langkat Regency. Material for construction were shipped from Penang and Singapore via the river Batang Serangan, and was transferred on site with 80 ox-carts.
