HK Martin is a professional ice hockey team playing in the second highest league (Slovak 1. Liga) in Slovakia. History The club was established in 1932 as Slávia Martin. Later the name was changed to Sokol, ŠK, ZŤS, Hutník, Martimex ZŤS, Martimex and MHC Martin (2000–2010). The Slávia, Sokol, ŠK (Športový klub - Sport Club), TJ (Telovýchovná jednota - bodybuilding unity) names are common names meaning sport organisation in Slovakia or Czechoslovakia. The names Hutnik, ZŤS and Martimex are connected to heavy industry companies, a major employer in the region from the 1930s to the 1990s, which was a general sponsors. Since the 2010/2011 season the name of the club has been MHC Mountfield. From 1970 the club played in the county league in 1.SNHL. In the 1992/1993 season, the hockey club advanced into the Slovak Extraliga. The Continental Cup 2008–09 was the 12th edition of the IIHF Continental Cup. The season started on September 19, 2008, and finished on January 18, 2009. The tournament was won by MHC Martin, who led the final group. IIHF Continental Cup
The Continental Cup is a second-level ice hockey tournament for European clubs (behind Champions Hockey League), begun in 1997 after the discontinuing of the European Cup. It was intended for teams from countries without representatives in the European Hockey League, with participating teams chosen by the countries' respective ice hockey associations. Hans Dobida served as chairman of the Continental Cup until 2018. Format The competition began in 1997–98 with 42 clubs from 26 countries, which expanded to 48 teams for the next two years. The tournament was played in seeded rounds of qualifying groups. There were three rounds of qualifying groups, with winners of qualifying groups progressing to the next round. The three winners of the third round groups entered the semifinals, along with the host club.
