Ziegler Polar Expedition
The Ziegler polar expedition of 1903–1905, also known as the Fiala expedition, was a failed attempt to reach the North Pole. The expedition party remained stranded north of the Arctic Circle for two years before being rescued, yet all but one of its members survived. The expedition is so named as it was funded by industrialist William Ziegler and led by explorer Anthony Fiala. Planning In the previous two years Ziegler had funded the 1901-1902 Baldwin-Ziegler Polar Expedition, but was dissatisfied with the results achieved by expedition leader Evelyn Briggs Baldwin. He selected Anthony Fiala, who was a photographer on the previous mission, to lead the second expedition. He was to renew the efforts to reach the pole with dog sledges from Franz Josef Land where plenty of Baldwin's provisions were still stored in depots. Rudolf Island
Prince Rudolf Land, Crown Prince Rudolf Land, Prince Rudolf Island or Rudolf Island (russian: Остров Рудольфа) is the northernmost island of the Franz Josef Archipelago, Russia and is home to the northernmost point in Russia. Owing to the island's location, its sheltered Teplitz Bay has served as a staging area for numerous polar expeditions. Salm Island
Salm Island (russian: остров Сальм; ) is a roughly round-shaped island in Franz Josef Land, Arkhangelsk Oblast, Russia. Salm Island was named by the Austro-Hungarian North Pole Expedition after the Salm-Hoogstraten aristocratic dynasty to which Count Karl Alexander, one of the expedition's main sponsors, belonged. Geography Salm Island is almost completely glacierized except for two headlands in its western and its southern shore. The Chernyshev Ice Cap ''(Lednik Chernysheva)'' covers most of the island. Johan Kjeldsen
Johan Kiil Kjeldsen (1840 – 1909) was a Norwegian skipper. He took part in many Arctic expeditions and is credited with the discovery of Kvitøya. Early life Kjeldsen was born in the village of Bakkejord on Kvaløya. He went on his first Arctic voyage in 1856. Master of ''Isbjørnen'' In 1871, he served as captain of the sloop ''Isbjørn'' for Karl Weyprecht and Julius Payer on an expedition to probe the area between Svalbard and Novaya Zemlya for navigability. They first attempted to reach Gillis Land from the east coast of Svalbard. Gillis Land had been sighted by Dutchman Cornelis Giles in 1707, but had proven elusive since. Many supposed that it was a fairly large landmass. Kjeldsen and the Norwegian crew were opposed to this route, as they knew from experience that the ice conditions in that area were typically bad. Terra Nova (ship)
''Terra Nova'' was a whaler and polar expedition ship. She is best known for carrying the 1910 British Antarctic Expedition, Robert Falcon Scott's last expedition. Construction ''Terra Nova'' (Latin for "new land") was built in 1884 for the Dundee whaling and sealing fleet. She was ideally suited to the polar regions and worked for 10 years in the annual seal fishery in the Labrador Sea, proving her worth for many years before she was called upon for expedition work. Alger Island (Russian: ''Остров Алджер''; ''Ostrov Aldzher'') is an island in Franz Josef Land, Russia. Lat 80° 22′ N, long 56° 03′ E. Geography The length of Alger Island is and its maximum width . Its highest point is the high summit of the Kupol Vostok Pervyy (Купол Восток Первый) ice dome that covers part of the island. It is formed by the central cluster of large islands in the midst of the archipelago.
