Yvonne Conolly
Cecile Yvonne Conolly CBE (1939 – 27 January 2021) was a Colony of Jamaica, Jamaican teacher, who became the United Kingdom's first female black Head teacher, headteacher in 1969, aged just 29-years-old. She arrived in the UK in 1963, as part of the Windrush generation, Windrush generation, and went on to have a career in education that spanned over 40 years. In 2020, Conolly was made a CBE for services to education. Early years Yvonne Conolly arrived in the UK from Jamaica in August 1963, as part of the Windrush generation, with just £36 in her pocket. She had trained for three years as a primary school teacher in Jamaica before taking the decision, with her ex-pat teacher friend Elizabeth Heybeard, to come to Britain on what at the time was described as a 'banana boat' – one of the many ships that brought over thousands of workers from the Caribbean. Colony Of Jamaica
The Crown Colony of Jamaica and Dependencies was a British colony from 1655, when it was captured by the English Protectorate from the Spanish Empire. Jamaica became a British colony from 1707 and a Crown colony in 1866. The Colony was primarily used for sugarcane production, and experienced many slave rebellions over the course of British rule. Jamaica was granted independence in 1962. 17th century English conquest In late 1654, English leader Oliver Cromwell launched the ''Western Design'' armada against Spain's colonies in the Caribbean. In April 1655, General Robert Venables led the armada in an attack on Spain's fort at Santo Domingo, Hispaniola. However, the Spanish repulsed this poorly-executed attack, known as the Siege of Santo Domingo, and the English troops were soon decimated by disease.
