Yvette Cason
Yvette Cason is an American television, theatre, and film actress, and a former Miss Black America from Washington, D.C. Career Cason was an understudy for the character of Effie White in the original 1981 Broadway musical ''Dreamgirls'', 1985 international tour, and 1987 Broadway revival. In 2006, she played May, the mother of Deena Jones, portrayed by Beyoncé Knowles in the feature film version of ''Dreamgirls''. She also appeared in an episode of the sitcom ''The King of Queens'' as Mrs. Blanchard in the episode "Road Rayge". Her early musical training (while growing up in Washington, DC) was at The Sewell Music Conservatory. Cason played Dahlia, the wicked stepmother, in the original 1996 run of ''Sisterella ''Sisterella'' is a musical, presented and produced by Michael Jackson with Miramax Films in association with Tribeca. Miss Black America
The Miss Black America beauty contest is a competition for young African-American women. The pageant has garnered the support of artists, activists and performers including Stevie Wonder, Curtis Mayfield, and Oprah Winfrey. After 40 years, in 2009 the pageant had a "kick off" in Washington, D.C. to rebrand the competition. The first teen winner was Ashley Anglin. The first runner-up teen was Monet Jackson, a resident of Mitchellville, MD; and Destiny Welch, second runner-up and also an MD resident. The adult winner was DC native and MD resident, Miss Kamilla Collier-Mullin. The first runner-up Miss Cherie A.
