Southern Federal District
The Southern Federal District ( rus, Ю́жный федера́льный о́круг, Yuzhny federalny okrug, ˈjuʐnɨj fʲɪdʲɪˈralʲnɨj ˈokrʊk) is one of the federal districts of Russia, eight federal districts of Russia. Its territory lies mostly on the Pontic–Caspian steppe of southern Russia. The Southern Federal District shares borders with Ukraine, the Azov Sea, and the Black Sea in the west, and Kazakhstan and the Caspian Sea in the east. The Southern Federal District was originally called the North Caucasian Federal District when it was founded in May 2000, but was renamed for political reasons on 21 June 2000. On 19 January 2010, the Southern Federal District was split in two, with its former southern territories forming a new North Caucasian Federal District. Southern Administrative Okrug
Southern Administrative Okrug, or Yuzhny Administrative Okrug (russian: link=no, Южный административный округ, ), is one of the twelve high-level territorial divisions (administrative okrugs) of the federal city of Moscow, Russia.Law #13-47 As of the 2010 Census, its population was 1,716,808, up from 1,593,065 recorded during the 2002 Census. History The territory that comprises modern Southern Administrative Okrug attracted settlers from time immemorial, even in spite of the fact that it had historically been an unsafe area. In order to protect the borders, powerful monasteries were built. The first one was the Danilov Monastery, founded in 1271 by Prince Daniel of Moscow. In 1593, the Donskoy Monastery was established to commemorate the victory over Khan Kazi-Girey. Villages appeared and grew near the monastery.
