Yuri Yankelevich
Yuri Yankelevich (Russian: Юрий Исаевич Янкелевич) (7 March 1909 – 22 September 1973) was a Soviet violin pedagogue who taught many internationally known virtuosos during his long tenure at the Moscow Conservatory. Life and career Yuri Yankelevich was born in Basel, Switzerland. His father, Isay Leontyevich Yankelevich, a prominent lawyer, was one of the founders of the Omsk Philharmonic Society. In Omsk, young Yuri studied with Leopold Auer's student, Anisim Berlin, a grandfather of Natalia Gutman. In 1923 he entered Leningrad Conservatory, the class of Hovhaness Nalbandian (also a student of Leopold Auer). On Yankelevich's graduation composer Alexander Glazunov commented: "a career of a virtuoso violinist would certainly be his calling". Mikhail Kopelman
Mikhail Kopelman is a Russian-American violinist. He was born in 1947 in Uzhhorod and studied at the Moscow Conservatory with professors Maya Glezarova and Yuri Yankelevich. In 1973, he was awarded 2nd prize in the Long-Thibaud-Crespin Competition. He was a member of the Bolshoi Theatre Orchestra, and was a concertmaster of the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra. He played first violin in the Borodin Quartet for 20 years starting in 1976. He played first violin in the Tokyo String Quartet. Kopelman taught at the Moscow Conservatory from 1980 to 1993. He emigrated to the United States with his family in 1993. Vesna Stefanovich-Gruppman
Vesna Stefanovich-Gruppman is a violin and viola professor at the Rotterdam Conservatory (CODARTS), a position she has held since 2006. Stefanovich was born in Serbia which was then part of Yugoslavia. She met her future husband, Igor Gruppman, while they were both students at the Moscow Conservatory. Vesna Stefanovich's solo career began when she was still a teenager, receiving First Prize at the Jaroslav Kocián International Violin Competition and becoming the first artist to win the National Violin Competition in her native Yugoslavia six times in a row. By the age of sixteen, she had performed as a soloist with such ensembles as the Munich Chamber Orchestra, the Moscow Philharmonic and the Prague Philharmonic. Mikhail Lvovich Bezverkhny (russian: Михаил Львович Безверхний; born 27 July 1947 in Leningrad) is a Soviet and later Russian violinist, violist and composer. Life and career Born in Saint Petersburg in 1947, Bezverkhny commenced his violin studies at the age of 5 at the Central Music School of the Conservatory of Saint Petersburg. He was a student of Liubov Segal (student of Leopold Auer) and Jacob Riabinkov. In 1965 he started his studies at the Moscow Conservatory under Yuri Yankelevich - one of the most prominent violin professors of the 20th century. Taras (Daniel) Gabora is a violinist and prominent violin teacher. He was born in Yellow Creek, Saskatchewan, 23 Apr 1932. Early life He studied at the University of Manitoba with Richard Seaborn, at the Paris Conservatory 1952–3 with René Benedetti, in Vienna 1953-7 with Ernst Morawec, and in Amsterdam 1957-8 with Szymon Goldberg. (He worked later – 1969 – with Yuri Jankelevich in Salzburg.) In 1956, on graduating from the Vienna Academy of Music, he received the Austrian Grand Prize. Career Gabora settled in Montreal, Quebec in 1962. Levon Ambartsumian
Levon Ambartsumian (russian: Лево́н Амбарцумя́н; hy, Լևոն Համբարձումյան; born 1955) is an Armenian classical violinist and conductor. Levon Ambartsumian currently lives and works in Athens, Georgia, United States. Levon Ambartsumian studied in the Moscow Central Music School and then in the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory, where his teachers were Mikhail Garlitsky, Felix Andrievski, Yuri Yankelevich, Leonid Kogan and Igor Bezrodny. In 1977 he became the First Prize winner of Zagreb International Violin Competition headed by Henryk Szeryng. Vladimir Spivakov
Vladimir Teodorovich Spivakov (Russian: Влади́мир Теодо́рович Спивако́в; born 12 September 1944) is a Soviet and Russian conductor and violinist best known for his work with the Moscow Virtuosi chamber orchestra. Spivakov was born in Ufa. He studied at the Moscow Conservatory. Spivakov is also considered one of the foremost violinists of his generation, having studied with Yuri Yankelevich at the Moscow Conservatory. Spivakov currently serves as the Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the National Philharmonic of Russia. He conducted the music for Garri Bardin's 2010 animated feature, ''The Ugly Duckling''. Nelli Efimovna Shkolnikova (8 July 19282 February 2010) was a Russian Jewish classical violinist who spent many years teaching in Australia and the United States. She was born in the Ukrainian village of Zolotonosha. At the age of three, she moved with her family to Moscow, and soon displayed aptitude for the violin. At the age of five she entered the Moscow Conservatory, where she studied with Lillia Kossodo and Yuri Yankelevich. She played her first concerto at age eight. She won the 1953 Marguerite Long-Jacques Thibaud Competition in Paris when she was 25. She then embarked on an international performing career, as well as teaching. She appeared in concert in the then Soviet Union, Europe, USA, Canada, Japan, Australia and New Zealand. She became a faculty member at the Gnessin Institute of Music in Moscow.
