Yuk Ming Dennis Lo
Dennis Yuk Ming Lo (, born 12 October 1963) is a Hong Kong molecular biologist, and an important contributor to the development of non-invasive prenatal testing. He is the current Associate Dean (Research) and Li Ka Shing Professor of Medicine at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), as well as the head of the Department of Chemical Pathology of CUHK and the director of the Li Ka Shing Institute of Health Sciences. His research focuses on the detection of cell-free fetal DNA in blood plasma. Early life and education Lo was born in Hong Kong in 1963. His mother taught music and his father, Wai-hoi Lo, who immigrated from Chaozhou to Hong Kong in 1946, was a psychiatrist and the former head of Castle Peak Hospital. He also has a younger brother. Cell-free fetal DNA (cffDNA) is fetal DNA that circulates freely in the maternal blood. Maternal blood is sampled by venipuncture. Analysis of cffDNA is a method of non-invasive prenatal diagnosis frequently ordered for pregnant women of advanced maternal age. Two hours after delivery, cffDNA is no longer detectable in maternal blood. Background cffDNA originates from placental trophoblasts. Fetal DNA is fragmented when placental microparticles are shed into the maternal blood circulation. cffDNA fragments are approximately 200 base pairs (bp) in length. Noninvasive prenatal testing (NIPT) is a method used to determine the risk for the fetus being born with certain chromosomal abnormalities, such as trisomy 21, trisomy 18 and trisomy 13. This testing analyzes small DNA fragments that circulate in the blood of a pregnant woman. Unlike most DNA found in the nucleus of a cell, these fragments are not found within the cells, instead they are free-floating, and so are called cell free fetal DNA (cffDNA).
