Ystradgynlais Rugby Football Club is a Welsh rugby union club based in Ystradgynlais, Wales. The club is a member of the Welsh Rugby Union and is also a feeder club for the Ospreys. The club was established in 1890. Ystradgynlais
Ystradgynlais (, ) is a town on the River Tawe in southwest Powys, Wales. It is the second-largest town in Powys and is in the historic county of Brecknockshire. The town has a high proportion of Welsh language-speakers. The community includes Cwmtwrch, Abercraf and Cwmgiedd, with a population of 8,092 in the 2011 census. It forms part of the Swansea Urban Area where the Ystradgynlais subdivision has a population of 10,248. History The place-name Ystradgynlais, meaning 'vale of the river Cynlais' – Cynlais may be a personal name, or derive from ''cyn'' ('chisel') and ''glais'' ('stream') – is first recorded in 1372. In the 1600s there were only a couple of houses by the church and a pub (now the rectory). In 1801 there were only 993 residents in the town living in only 196 houses. Kevin Hopkins
Kevin Hopkins (born 29 September 1961) is a retired Welsh International rugby union player. He made seven appearances for his country, as well as representing Cardiff RFC, Swansea RFC and Neath RFC in the top division of Welsh club rugby, and played twice for the Barbarians invitational side. Following his retirement from playing, Hopkins has held numerous coaching positions. His grandfather, Tom Hopkins, was also a Wales international rugby player. Club career Hopkins started his playing career with his home town club Ystradgynlais RFC before going on to represent the first class teams Cardiff RFC, Swansea RFC and Neath RFC. He was club captain for Swansea during the 1991–92 season when they won their first Welsh league title. Dan Baker (rugby Player)
Dan Baker (born 5 July 1992) is a Wales international rugby union player. A back row forward, he plays for Ystradgynlais RFC having previously played for the Dragons, Stade Montois, Ospreys and Aberavon RFC Club career Baker came through the Ospreys grade age system, beginning with Ystradgynlais RFC. He played for Swansea RFC, before makes his debut for the Ospreys in January 2013 in an Anglo-Welsh Cup fixture against the Dragons. He signed a contract extension with the Ospreys in April 2014. In November 2015, he signed a National Dual Contract with the Ospreys and the Welsh Rugby Union. Baker signed another extension with the Ospreys in November 2016. Baker was named as man of the match in a Pro12 match against Connacht on 7 January 2017, scoring a try in the win. He suffered a serious knee injury on 15 October 2017, and was ruled out for the remainder of the season. Baker ultimately did not return until September 2019. Ness Flowers (birth unknown) is a Welsh former rugby union and professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1970s and 1980s. He captained the Welsh Schools Under-15's in 1971, and played for Wales Youth in 1973. William Lewis Thomas
William Lewis Thomas (30 June 1913 – 1 February 1995) born in Ystradgynlais, was a Welsh rugby union and rugby league footballer who played in the 1930s and 1940s. He played club level rugby union (RU) for Ystradgynlais RFC and Neath RFC, as a Scrum-half, and club level rugby league (RL) for Ystradgynlais RLFC. He captained Ystradgynlais RFC in 1937/38, and played for Neath RFC between the years of 1938 and 1941, and then for a further season in 1946. He was one half of the then famous pre-war halfback partnership, alongside Welsh international outside half W. E. Jones, he died in Ystradgynlais. He played in two final Welsh trials but lost out on selection to Swansea Scrum Half Haydn Tanner on both occasions. Mark Bennett (rugby Union, Born 1969)
Anthony Mark Bennett (born 26 January 1969) is a Welsh International rugby union player. He made three appearances for his country, as well as representing Swansea RFC, Cardiff RFC and Neath RFC in the top division of Welsh club rugby, and Bristol RFC in English club rugby. Following his retirement from playing, Bennett became a strength and conditioning coach, holding the position of conditioning coach for the Welsh national team for four years. Rugby career Bennett made five appearances for Swansea RFC during the 1989/90 season. He moved to Cardiff RFC for the 1990/91 season, where he spend the majority of his playing career. Vernon Cooper
Vernon Cooper (born 12 June 1977) is a former Welsh rugby union footballer, who played for the Scarlets in the Celtic League. Cooper has also played for Wales. His usual position was at lock. Playing career Cooper represented Wales at a number of national levels, including Under-18, Under-19 and Under-21, as well as playing for the Wales 'A' team. He was promoted to the senior national team in 2002. He made his senior debut for Wales on 16 November 2002, playing against Canada at the Millennium Stadium; Wales won 32–21. Stan Wright (rugby Union)
Stan Wright (born 29 September 1978) is a retired Cook Islands international rugby union player, who played in the prop position for Leinster, Blues and Stade Français. Playing career Stan's played for clubs such as the Marist Club in Whangarei, and for Northland in the Air New Zealand Cup where he played alongside Fijian flyer, Rupeni Caucaunibuca. Anthony Buchanan (born 30 June 1955 in Ystradgynlais, Wales) is a former rugby union player. A prop forward, Buchanan made his international debut for Wales versus Tonga on 29 May 1987. He played for Wales in the first Rugby World Cup later that year and he featured in the Wales Triple Crown winning team of 1988.
