Yowie
Yowie is one of several names for an Australian folklore entity that is reputed to live in the Outback. The creature has its roots in Aboriginal oral history. In parts of Queensland, they are known as ''quinkin'' (or as a type of quinkin), and as ''joogabinna'', in parts of New South Wales they are called ''Ghindaring'', ''jurrawarra'', ''myngawin'', ''puttikan'', ''doolaga'', ''gulaga'' and ''thoolagal''. Other names include ''yaroma'', ''noocoonah'', ''wawee'', ''pangkarlangu'', ''jimbra'' and ''tjangara''. Yowie-type creatures are common in Aboriginal Australian legends, particularly in the eastern Australian states. Yowie (band)
Yowie is an experimental rock band from St. Louis, Missouri, founded in 2000. The original lineup consisted of Jeremiah Wonsewitz on electric guitar, Jimbo "Moppy" or "Lil' Pumpkin" on electric guitar and Shawn "The Defenestrator" O'Connor on drums. Yowie plays a complex style of unprocessed instrumental math rock, composed of meticulously arranged pieces that rely on compositional techniques that are seldom heard in rock based music. It is high-velocity music of intense discipline, rigid structure and focused force. The music has been compared to math rock bands such as Hella, Tera Melos, Arab on Radar, Ahleuchatistas, Don Caballero and Zeuhl band Koenji Hyakkei. Despite these attempts at reference points, the band's sound remains difficult to characterize. Yowie is a confectionery and publishing brand originating in Australia in 1995 by Cadbury and Kidcorp. It was one of the top selling chocolates in Australia in the late 1990s and early 2000s, selling over a million units a week. After a break of nearly a decade, Yowie relaunched in 2014 for US markets. History Yowie began as the brainchild of English-born advertising man, illustrator and author Geoff Pike and South African-Australian advertising director and novelist Bryce Courtenay. After serving in the navy, Pike jumped ship in Australia, finding work as a jackaroo on remote cattle stations. He became enchanted by Australia's outback and its unique wildlife, and devoted his free time to nursing injured and orphaned animals back to health. Yowie Bay, New South Wales
Yowie Bay is a suburb in southern Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Yowie Bay is located 24 kilometres south of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of the Sutherland Shire. Yowie Bay takes its name from the small bay on the north shore of the Port Hacking estuary (also known locally as the Port Hacking River). It is bounded to the north by the suburb of Miranda and shares its postcode of 2228. Located to the east, across the Yowie Bay waterway, is Caringbah South. To the west is the suburb of Gymea Bay, across the bay of the same name. History The name for the waterway ''Ewey Bay'' first appears in an 1827 map by surveyor Robert Dixon. As Dixon had labelled other localities around Port Hacking with Aboriginal names, it is assumed that ''Ewey'' was Dixon's recording of the Aboriginal name too.
