Yountville ( or ) is a city in Napa County, in the Wine Country of California, United States. Located in the North Bay region of the Bay Area, the population was 3,436 at the 2020 census. Almost a third of the town's population lives at the Veterans Home of California. Yountville is a popular tourist destination, particularly for its wineries and its two famed Michelin-starred restaurants, The French Laundry and Bouchon. History The town was named Sebastopol in 1855. A town in nearby Sonoma County had already claimed that name (Sebastopol, California), and thus the town was renamed in 1867 to honor George C. Veterans Home Of California Yountville
The Veterans Home of California is located in Yountville, California, and was founded in 1884. The facility is the largest of its kind in the United States and has a population of almost 800 aged and disabled veterans of World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, Gulf War, War in Afghanistan, and Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom. Several levels of care are offered to residents, including domiciliary services, residential care for the elderly, intermediate nursing care, skilled nursing care, and outpatient clinic. The French Laundry
The French Laundry is a three-Michelin star French and Californian cuisine restaurant located in Yountville, California, in the Napa Valley. Sally Schmitt opened The French Laundry in 1978 and designed her menus around local, seasonal ingredients; she was a visionary chef and pioneer of California cuisine. Since 1994 the chef and owner of The French Laundry is Thomas Keller. The restaurant building dates from 1900 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. History The building was built as a saloon in the 1900s by a Scottish stonesman for Pierre Guillaume. In the 1920s, the building was owned by John Lande who used it as a French steam laundry, which is the origin of the restaurant's name. The 2000 Yountville earthquake occurred with a moment magnitude of 5 on a previously unmapped fault, about south southwest of Yountville, California in the Mayacamas Mountain Range under Mount Veeder and about south northwest of Napa, California. It occurred at 01:36 PDT (08:36 UTC) on September 3. Earthquake The earthquake occurred at a depth of 9.4 km on a northwest-oriented fault and with a right-lateral strike-slip motion. The epicenter of the earthquake was near the West Napa Fault, a previously unmarked fault. Damage Several unreinforced masonry buildings in downtown Napa suffered exterior damage as a result of the earthquake. Napa Valley is an American Viticultural Area (AVA) located in Napa County in California's Wine Country. It was established by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) on January 27, 1981.
