''Youngblood (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)'' is an album by the American band War, released in 1978. It is the soundtrack to the film of the same name. The album peaked at No. 69 on the ''Billboard'' 200. The title track peaked at No. 21 on ''Billboards Best Selling Soul Singles chart. Production The album was produced primarily by Jerry Goldstein. It was War's final album with B.B. Dickerson as a full member of the band; discounting Eric Burdon, it was also the band's final album with its original lineup. War (originally called Eric Burdon and War) is an American funk/rock/soul band from Long Beach, California, known for several hit songs (including "Spill the Wine", "The World Is a Ghetto", "The Cisco Kid", "Why Can't We Be Friends?", "Low Rider", and "Summer"). Formed in 1969, War is a musical crossover band that fuses elements of rock, funk, jazz, Latin, rhythm and blues, psychedelia, and reggae. Eric Victor Burdon (born 11 May 1941) is an English singer. He was previously the lead vocalist of R&B and rock band the Animals and funk band War. He is regarded as one of the British Invasion's most distinctive singers with his deep, powerful blues-rock voice. He is also known for his aggressive stage performances. In 2008, he was ranked 57th in ''Rolling Stone'''s list of "The 100 Greatest Singers of All Time". Early life Eric Burdon was born in 1941 in Walker, Newcastle upon Tyne, England. Robert Thomas Christgau ( ; born April 18, 1942) is an American music journalist and essayist. Among the most well-known and influential music critics, he began his career in the late 1960s as one of the earliest professional rock critics and later became an early proponent of musical movements such as hip hop, riot grrrl, and the import of African popular music in the West. ''Youngblood'' is a 1978 American film directed by Noel Nosseck. It stars Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs and features Bryan O'Dell in the title role. Ren Woods has a prominent supporting role. It was released by American International Pictures. The soundtrack to the film was written and performed by War. Plot Michael (O'Dell) is an African-American teenager in South-Central Los Angeles, being raised by a single mother and beginning to drift away from school. Before long, Michael is running with a tough local street gang, the Kingsmen, who christen him with the nickname "Youngblood".
