Dance, Dance, Dance (Neil Young Song)
"Dance, Dance, Dance" is a song written by Neil Young that first appeared on Crazy Horse's debut album '' Crazy Horse'' in 1971. Young later released a live version of it himself and it has also been covered by other artists, including Dave Edmunds, The New Seekers, The Flying Burrito Brothers and Elvis Costello. Neil Young and Crazy Horse versions "Dance, Dance, Dance" was originally recorded by Young with Crazy Horse in 1969 for a country-rock album that was never released. Allmusic critic William Ruhlmann described the Crazy Horse version of "Dance, Dance, Dance" as a "country hoedown." '' Cash Box'' called it "country flavored." Young reused the melody to "Dance, Dance, Dance" for his song " Love Is a Rose" that was famously covered by Linda Ronstadt. Young biographer Paul Williams called "Dance, Dance, Dance" a "classic" and said it is much better than "Love Is a Rose." Young performed "Dance, Dance, Dance" live in concert from 1969 through 1971, and then in 1983, 198 ...

Sugar Mountain (song)
"Sugar Mountain" is a song by Canadian folk rock singer and composer Neil Young. Young composed the song on November 12, 1964—his 19th birthday—at the Victoria Hotel in Fort William, Ontario (now Thunder Bay), where he had been touring with his Winnipeg band the Squires. Its lyrics are reminiscences about his youth in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Releases The first known recording of the song was made on December 15, 1965 for a demo record at Elektra Records in New York City; this version appears on the "Early Years" disc on ''The Archives Vol. 1 1963–1972''. The first formal release was a recording of the song made on November 10, 1968, as part of a live performance at Canterbury House in Ann Arbor, Michigan. This recording was released as the B-side of Young's 1969 single " The Loner" (and again as the B-side of the "Cinnamon Girl" the following year), but was not collected on an album until the 3-LP compilation ''Decade'' was released in 1977. A CD/DVD release of recordings fr ...

Down By The River (Neil Young Song)
"Down by the River" is a song composed by Neil Young. It was first released on his 1969 album with Crazy Horse, ''Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere''. Young explained the context of the story in the liner notes of his 1977 anthology album ''Decade'', stating that he wrote "Down by the River," "Cinnamon Girl" and "Cowgirl in the Sand" while delirious in bed in Topanga Canyon with a fever. Lyrics and music The lyrics tell the story of someone who killed his lover by shooting her after feeling unable to continue from the emotional highs of their relationship. Young himself has provided multiple explanations for the lyrics. In an interview with Robert Greenfield in 1970, a year after the song was released, Young claimed that "there's no real murder in it. It's about blowing your thing with a chick. It's a plea, a desperate cry." Later, when introducing the song in New Orleans on September 27, 1984, Young said that the song depicts a man "who had a lot of trouble controlling himself" wh ...

Don't Let It Bring You Down
"Don't Let It Bring You Down" is the seventh track on Neil Young's 1970 studio album ''After the Gold Rush''. Background The song was written by Young. It also appears on the 1971 Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young live album ''4 Way Street'' as well as Young's 2007 album ''Live at Massey Hall 1971'', which was recorded in 1971, and Young's 2013 album '' Live at the Cellar Door'', which was recorded in 1970. John Reed wrote an arrangement of this for The Hampton String Quartet in 2006. The song is played in double drop C tuning, which is similar to double drop D; however, the whole guitar is down tuned a whole step first, making the guitar strings C, G, C, F, A, and C. On ''4 Way Street'', Young says, "Here is a new song, it's guaranteed to bring you right down, it's called 'Don't Let It Bring You Down'. It sorta starts off real slow and then fizzles out altogether." The crowd then roars with laughter. Cover versions * Perhaps the first cover was recorded by Caleb Quaye's band Hookf ...

Heart Of Gold (Neil Young Song)
"Heart of Gold" is a song by Canadian singer-songwriter Neil Young. From his fourth album ''Harvest'', it is Young's only U.S. No. 1 single. In Canada, it reached No. 1 on the ''RPM'' national singles chart for the first time on April 8, 1972, on which date Young held the top spot on both the singles and albums charts. ''Billboard'' ranked it as the No. 17 song for 1972. In 2004, ''Rolling Stone'' ranked it No. 297 on their list of the 500 greatest songs of all time, No. 303 in an updated 2010 list, and No. 259 in 2021. Description The song, which features backup vocals by James Taylor and Linda Ronstadt, is one of a series of soft acoustic pieces which were written partly as a result of a back injury. Unable to stand for long periods of time, Young could not play his electric guitar and so returned to his acoustic guitar, which he could play sitting down. He also played his harmonica during the three instrumental portions, including the introduction to the song. "Heart of Gold" ...

A Man Needs A Maid (song)
"A Man Needs a Maid" is a song written by Neil Young that was first released on his 1972 album ''Harvest''. It is one of two songs on ''Harvest'' on which Young is accompanied by the London Symphony Orchestra. It has appeared on several of Young's live and compilation albums. Lyrics and music Music critic Johnny Rogan describes the melody of "A Man Needs a Maid" as "haunting." Allmusic critic William Ruhlmann describes the song as "an impressionistic musing by a man who is contemplating the start of a new romantic relationship." The lyrics of "A Man Needs a Maid" have generated controversy due to interpretations that they are chauvinistic. This is largely the result of Young using the term "maid" with two meanings in the song, one of which is a housekeeper to cook and clean for him, and then leave. However, the rest of the lyrics make it clear that these lyrics were reflecting Young's own feelings of insecurity, and trying to balance his need for an equal relationship with a w ...

Cowgirl In The Sand
"Cowgirl in the Sand" is a song written by Neil Young and first released on his 1969 album ''Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere''. Young has included live versions of the song on several albums and on the Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young album ''4 Way Street''. It has also been covered by The Byrds on their self-titled album. Like three other songs from ''Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere'', "Cinnamon Girl", " Down by the River" and the title track, Young wrote "Cowgirl in the Sand" while he was suffering from the flu with a high fever at his home in Topanga, California. Lyrics and music The song's lyrics are about a promiscuous woman, or perhaps three different women if each stanza describes a different woman. Author Nigel Williamson describes the lyrics as "obscure and dreamlike, addressed to some idealized woman." Music critic Johnny Rogan describes the lyrics as "oblique", describing the woman as being both "idealistic" and "idealized" by the singer, referring particularly to the ...
