Young Australian Journalist Of The Year
The Young Australian Journalist of the Year award was launched in Australia in 2008 by the Walkley Foundation for Journalism, as a companion to its Walkley Awards for journalism. The latter is known as an Australian equivalent of the Pulitzer Prize. Awards are in five categories: print, television, radio, online and photography, to recognise the best work from Australian journalists aged 26 and under. Walkley Foundation For Journalism
The annual Walkley Awards are presented in Australia to recognise and reward excellence in journalism. They cover all media including print, television, documentary, radio, photographic and online media. The Gold Walkley is the highest prize and is chosen from all category winners. The awards are under the administration of the Walkley Foundation for Journalism. The Nikon Photography Prizes are also awarded by the Walkley Foundation at the awards ceremony, on behalf of Nikon. History The awards were instituted in five categories in 1956 by businessman Sir William Walkley, founder of Ampol. After his death, the awards were handled by the Australian Journalists' Association which, in 1992, was merged into the Media, Entertainment & Arts Alliance. Pulitzer Prize
The Pulitzer Prize () is an award for achievements in newspaper, magazine, online journalism, literature, and musical composition within the United States. It was established in 1917 by provisions in the will of Joseph Pulitzer, who had made his fortune as a newspaper publisher, and is administered by Columbia University. Prizes are awarded annually in twenty-one categories. In twenty of the categories, each winner receives a certificate and a US$15,000 cash award (raised from $10,000 in 2017). The winner in the public service category is awarded a gold medal. Entry and prize consideration The Pulitzer Prize does not automatically consider all applicable works in the media, but only those that have specifically been entered. Sophie McNeill
Sophie McNeill is an Australian journalist, television presenter, author and human rights activist. She is best known for her work reporting from conflict zones. She was a reporter with the ABC's investigative program Four Corners and is a former Middle East Correspondent for ABC news; and has delivered reports from across the region including in Afghanistan, Israel, Iraq, Pakistan, Syria, Yemen, Egypt, Turkey and Gaza. She resigned from the ABC in 2020 to work as a researcher for Human Rights Watch. Life and career McNeill began making documentaries in 2001, her first film highlighted the crippling health crisis in a recently-liberated East Timor, for which she received Western Australia's Young Person of the Year Award.
