You're Not So Tough
''You're Not So Tough'' is a 1940 Universal Studios drama film directed by Joe May and starring ''Dead End Kids'' and the '' Little Tough Guys'' and was the first in the series where Billy Halop and Huntz Hall weren't billed in the opening credits before the ''Dead End Kids'' name. Plot The Dead End Kids ride a freight train through California. After the kids get arrested for vagrancy, members Tom and Pig are hired to work on a ranch owned by kindly Mama Posito. Tom learns that Posito hasn't seen her son in years, but believes that he may still be alive. In an attempt to steal her money, Tom decides to pose as her son. However, Posito's soon gets the best of Tom, and he decides to stay with her for love, rather than for greed. Joe May
Joe May (born Joseph Otto Mandl; 7 November 1880 – 29 April 1954) was an Austrian film director and film producer and one of the pioneers of German cinema. Biography After studying in Berlin and a variety of odd jobs, he began his career as a stage director of operettas in Hamburg. In 1902 he had married the actress Mia May (born Hermine Pfleger) and took his stage name from hers. Continental-Kunstfilm As Joe May, he made ten films for Continental-Kunstfilm GmbH in Berlin; the first, ''In der Tiefe des Schachtes (In the Depths of the Pit)'' was released in November 1912, followed by ''Vorglühen des Balkanbrandes (The Balkan Traitors)'' (starring Ernst Reicher). Nan Grey (born Eschal Loleet Grey Miller; July 25, 1918 – July 25, 1993) was an American film actress. Early years Grey was born in Houston, Texas. In 1934, at age 16, she went to Hollywood with her mother for a holiday. She was persuaded by a friend to take a screen test and ended up in pictures. Grey attended the school that Universal Studios operated for children who had film contracts. Career Film Grey's screen debut was in 1934 in Warner Bros.'s ''Firebird''. She starred opposite John Wayne in the 1936 film ''Sea Spoilers''. Grey appeared in the Universal Monsters films ''Dracula's Daughter'' (1936) and ''The Invisible Man Returns'' (1940). Edward Carlingford Waller (June 14, 1889 – August 20, 1977) was an American stage, film and television actor. Early years Born in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, he was a son of the Rev. Thomas M. Waller, a Presbyterian minister, and Anna Taylor Waller, his wife; his parents were originally from England. Eddy Waller's involvement with dramatics began when he was a student at the University of Wisconsin. Career Stage Waller performed in vaudeville and the legitimate theater before he entered films in Hollywood. His professional stage debut came in Chicago, Illinois. An item published in ''The Indianapolis News'' May 3, 1923, reported, "He has had several years' experience as leading man and also as director, and produces the Grand Players' plays as well as taking the leading roles." Joe King ( – ) was an American actor of silent films and talkies as well as a director and writer. Biography King was born in Austin, Texas as Joseph Sayer King and acted in 211 films from 1912 to 1946. He appeared in his later years mainly in minor, uncredited roles.
