Yorkis Pérez
Yorkis Miguel Vargas Pérez (born September 30, 1967) is a former Major League Baseball pitcher. The left-hander appeared in 337 games over nine seasons for the Chicago Cubs, Florida Marlins, New York Mets, Philadelphia Phillies, Houston Astros and Baltimore Orioles, all as a relief pitcher. He also pitched three games in for the Yomiuri Giants. Career He signed a minor league deal with Baltimore just before the start of the 2002 season after he was released by the Arizona Diamondbacks during the last week of spring training. After spending almost the entire first half of the campaign with the Rochester Red Wings, his contract was purchased by the Orioles on June 25. He went 0–0 with one save and a 3.29 earned run average (ERA) in 23 appearances before an appendectomy on September 12 ended his season. He was released nineteen days later on October 1. Carlos Gross Pérez (born April 14, 1971) is a former pitcher in Major League Baseball and the brother of former major league players Melido Pérez and Pascual Pérez (baseball), Pascual Pérez. Biography Pérez signed with the Montreal Expos as an amateur free agent in . After being an Major League Baseball All-Star Game, All-Star pitcher in his debut season in , Pérez's career looked extremely promising. However, he soon suffered an untimely and devastating injury which forced him to miss the entire 1996 in baseball, 1996 season. After rehabilitation, he re-joined the Expos in but still displayed steady showings of his All-Star form, earning a career-high 12 wins and leading the majors with five shutouts. Pascual Gross Pérez (May 17, 1957 – November 1, 2012) was a Dominican professional baseball player who pitched in the Major Leagues for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Atlanta Braves, Montreal Expos, and New York Yankees. Career Pérez was signed by scout Neftalí Cruz for the Pittsburgh Pirates organization in 1976. He reached the major league club in 1980. Traded to the Braves on June 30, 1982, he enjoyed his winningest seasons while with that organization, going 15–8 and 14–8 in 1983 and 1984 respectively. His most successful seasons were spent with the Montreal Expos, where he went 28-21 with a 2.80 ERA between 1987 and 1989. In baseball statistics, earned run average (ERA) is the average of earned runs allowed by a pitcher per nine innings pitched (i.e. the traditional length of a game). In baseball, a save (abbreviated SV or S) is credited to a pitcher who finishes a game for the winning team under certain prescribed circumstances. Most commonly a pitcher earns a save by entering in the ninth inning of a game in which his team is winning by three or fewer runs and finishing the game by pitching one inning without losing the lead. The number of saves or percentage of save opportunities successfully converted are oft-cited statistics of relief pitchers, particularly those in the closer role. The save statistic was created by journalist Jerome Holtzman in 1959 to "measure the effectiveness of relief pitchers" and was adopted as an official Major League Baseball (MLB) statistic in 1969.
