York Federation of Students (YFS) is a student union which claims to represent approximately 55,000 students at York University in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The York Federation of Students is a member of the Canadian Federation of Students (Local 68). History The student government was founded in 1968 as the York Student Council. Around 1975, the student government had become the Council of York Student Federations. By the early 1990s the name changed to York Federation of Students by their president at the time, Jian Ghomeshi (later a CBC Radio host). About The YFS is a dues paying student union representing over 53,000 full and part-time undergrad students at the York University. The stated purpose of the YFS is to bring together the elected representatives of all the college governments on campus. The YFS also has appointed members of campus organizations into a single body. The Canadian Federation of Students (CFS) is the largest student organization in Canada, representing over 530,000 students from across Canada. Formed in 1981, the stated goal of the Federation is to represent the collective voice of Canadian students and work at the federal level for high quality, accessible post-secondary education. Jian Ghomeshi
Jian Ghomeshi (born June 9, 1967) is a British-born Persian-Canadian broadcaster, writer, musician, producer and former CBC personality. From 1990 to 2000, he was a vocalist and drummer in the Thornhill-based folk-pop band Moxy Früvous. In the 2000s, he became a television and radio broadcaster. He hosted, among others, the CBC Newsworld program ''Play'' (2002–2005), the CBC Radio One program '' The National Playlist'' (2005–2006), and the CBC Radio One program '' Q'', which he co-created and hosted from 2007 to 2014, until he was fired by the CBC. ''Q'', which featured interviews with prominent cultural and entertainment figures, became the highest rated show in its timeslot in CBC history.
