York Colored Monarchs
The York Base Ball Club, nicknamed the Monarchs or Colored Monarchs, were a minor league baseball team that represented York, Pennsylvania, in the 1890 Eastern Interstate League. The team's roster was composed entirely of African Americans, hired from the two premier black professional clubs of the time, the Cuban Giants of Trenton, New Jersey, and the New York Gorhams. The Monarchs were in first place with a 39–16 record when the league disbanded in July 1890. The team was sometimes referred to as the former or "original Cuban Giants", although the Monarchs' management was entirely different from that of the Cuban Giants, and the actual Cuban Giants continued to operate in 1890. The team's captain, third baseman / first baseman George Williams, led the league in both batting average (.386) and slugging percentage (.582), and finished second in stolen bases with 29. Cuban Giants
The Cuban Giants were the first fully salaried African-American professional baseball club. The team was originally formed in 1885 at the Argyle Hotel, a summer resort in Babylon, New York. Initially an independent barnstorming team, they played games against opponents of all types: major and minor league clubs, semiprofessional teams, even college and amateur squads. They would go on to join various short-lived East Coast leagues, and in 1888 became the "World Colored Champions". Despite their name, no Cubans played on the team. The "Cubes" remained one of the premier Negro league teams for nearly 20 years, and served as a model that future black teams would emulate. New York Gorhams
The New York Gorhams were a Negro league baseball team that played from 1886 to 1892. During their short existence the Gorhams grew to be one of the most successful black professional clubs in the country and challenged the supremacy of the Cuban Giants. Founding Founded by Ambrose Davis as a barnstorming club that ranged from Newburgh, New York, to Easton, Pennsylvania, in 1887 the Gorhams became founding members of the short-lived National Colored Base Ball League. The Gorhams also spent two brief periods as members of organized minor leagues, playing in the Middle States League of 1889 and representing Norwalk, Connecticut, in the 1891 Connecticut State League. George Williams (Negro Leagues)
George L. Williams (March 1864 – January 9, 1918) was an American baseball infielder who played on and managed predecessor teams to the Negro leagues. Hired as a policeman and assigned to Philadelphia's Eighth and Lombard streets police station in 1892, he was promoted in 1909, becoming "the city's only colored detective," according to ''The Philadelphia Inquirer''. Biography In 1885, Williams was recruited from a top amateur club in Philadelphia to play for the Cuban Giants. He served as the captain of the Cuban Giants from 1886 to 1889. Williams played on African American baseball teams in mostly-white minor leagues in 1889 and 1890. In 1890, he captained the York Colored Monarchs of the Eastern Interstate League, which was all-white, except for the Colored Monarchs and one integrated team. Sol White
King Solomon "Sol" White (June 12, 1868 – August 26, 1955) was an American professional baseball infielder, manager and executive, and one of the pioneers of the Negro leagues. An active sportswriter for many years, he wrote the first definitive history of black baseball in 1907. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2006. William Selden (baseball)
William H. Selden (October 10, 1866 – August 26, 1926), alternately spelled "Seldon", was an American pre-Negro league pitcher in the late 1800s. A native of Norfolk, Virginia, Selden began his professional career in 1887 with the Boston Resolutes. A dominating pitcher, Selden posted a 15–6 record with a 2.63 ERA and 100 strikeouts for the York Monarchs in 1890.
