Yong Hye-in
Yong Hye-in (Korean: 용혜인, born 12 April 1990) is a South Korean civil society activist and politician of the Basic Income Party. She was one of the main proponents of the silent march campaign, '' Stay Where You Are'', that originated in an announcement made during the Sinking of MV ''Sewol'' in 2014. Political career On 23 May 2021, Yong became the third sitting lawmaker in South Korean history to give birth while being a lawmaker. The National Assembly of the Republic of Korea, often shortened to the National Assembly in domestic English-language media, is the unicameral national legislature of South Korea. Elections to the National Assembly are held every four years. The latest legislative elections were held on 15 April 2020. The National Assembly has 300 seats, with 253 constituency seats and 47 proportional representation seats; 30 of the PR seats are assigned on additional member system, while 17 PR seats use the parallel voting method. The unicameral assembly consists of at least 200 members according to the South Korean constitution. In 1990 the assembly had 299 seats, 224 of which were directly elected from single-member districts in the general elections of April 1988. Sinking Of MV Sewol
The ferry MV ''Sewol'' sank on the morning of April 16, 2014, en route from Incheon towards Jeju in South Korea. The 6,825-ton vessel sent a distress signal from about north of Byeongpungdo at 08:58 KST (23:58 UTC, April 15, 2014). Out of 476 passengers and crew, 306 died in the disaster, including around 250 students from Danwon High School ( Ansan City). Of the approximately 172 survivors, more than half were rescued by fishing boats and other commercial vessels that arrived at the scene approximately 40 minutes before the Korea Coast Guard (KCG). The sinking of ''Sewol'' resulted in widespread social and political reaction within South Korea. Many people criticized the actions of the ferry's captain and most of the crew.
