Yitzhak Wittenberg
Yitzhak Wittenberg ( yi, איציק װיטנבערג, he, יצחק ויטנברג; 1907 – 16 July 1943) was a Jewish resistance fighter in Vilnius during World War II. He was a member of the Communist Party. He was the commander of the Fareynikte Partizaner Organizatsye (FPO), a resistance group in the Vilna Ghetto which was preparing an uprising should the final moments of the ghetto come. When the Germans learned about the existence of a Communist, Wittenberg, in the ghetto, they made a request to the head of the Jewish council, Jacob Gens, that Wittenberg should be surrendered to them. Gens betrayed Wittenberg to the police who arrested him, but he was freed by young FPO fighters. Subsequently, Gens insisted that Wittenberg surrender. Feeling he did not have the support of the ghetto for an uprising and fearing a massacre, he surrendered. Jewish Resistance Under Nazi Rule
Jewish resistance under Nazi rule took various forms of organized underground activities conducted against German occupation regimes in Europe by Jews during World War II. According to historian Yehuda Bauer, Jewish resistance was defined as actions that were taken against all laws and actions acted by Germans. The term is particularly connected with the Holocaust and includes a multitude of different social responses by those oppressed, as well as both passive and armed resistance conducted by Jews themselves. Due to military strength of Nazi Germany and its allies, as well as the administrative system of ghettoization and the hostility of various sections of the civilian population, few Jews were able to effectively resist the Final Solution militarily. Menachem Kaiser
Menachem Kaiser is a Canadian writer. He received the 2022 Sami Rohr Prize for Jewish Literature for his book ''Plunder: A Memoir of Family Property and Nazi Treasure''. Biography Kaiser grew up in Toronto, Ontario and graduated from Columbia University in 2009. He then received an MFA from the University of Michigan, and was a Fulbright Fellow to Lithuania. As part of his Fulbright grant, he taught at Vilnius University and created the Vilnius Ghetto Project, an interactive map of the Vilna Ghetto which allows users to explore the streets and buildings of the former ghetto from the perspective of its former residents. Kaiser's grandfather, Maier Menachem Kajzer, was a Jew born in Poland who survived The Holocaust before moving to Los Angeles and spent years trying to reclaim his family's apartment building in Sosnowiec.
