Yin Mingzhu
Yin Mingzhu (; 1904–1989), also known as Pearl Ing, was a Chinese actress. Mingzhu was most famous for her role as an actress but was also an investor and production coordinator specifically during her time off camera in the 1930s. She was the mother of beauty contest winner and actress Judy Dan. Early life and education Mingzhu was born, Yin Shangzian, in 1904 in Wujiang, now part of Suzhou, Jiangsu Province of China. She moved to Shanghai at a young age. Mingzhu came from a distinguished family as her father was a well known painter and members of her family from the past three generations had been members of the Hanlin Academy, an academy known for being prestigious within academics and administration. Mingzhu's father died when she was a child, leaving her mother a winning lottery ticket which allowed her to move the entire family to Shanghai. Ma-Xu Weibang
Ma-Xu Weibang (; 1905–1961) was a Chinese film director active in mainland China from the 1920s to 1940s, and later in Hong Kong, perhaps best known for his work in the horror genre, the most important unarguably being ''The Phantom of the Opera''-inspired, ''Song at Midnight''. Ma-Xu was also known for a few acting roles early in his career, as well as for being a screenwriter. The director of 33 known films, much of Ma-Xu's early work has been lost. Ma-Xu was born Xu Weibang in 1905 in Hangzhou, Zhejiang. Little is known of this early period except that his parents died while Ma-Xu was still a child, which was said to influence his decision to incorporate his wife's surname, "Ma". Bu Wancang
Bu Wancang (July 1, 1900 – December 30, 1973), also known by his English name Richard Poh, was a prolific Chinese film director and screenwriter active between the 1920s and the 1960s. He was born in Anhui. Career Originally a member of the Shanghai cinema scene, Bu worked for several studios before becoming a major director for the Mingxing Film Company. By 1931, Bu moved to Mingxing's rival, Lianhua, where he directed such films as '' Love and Duty'' (1931) and ''The Peach Girl'' (1931) (both with actress Ruan Lingyu). As the war with Japan intensified Bu made several films with subtle patriotic themes, most notably 1939's '' Mulan Joins the Army''. ''The Cave of the Silken Web'' () a.k.a. ''Journey to the West - the Spiders Cave'' () a.k.a. ''Spiders'' is a 1927 Chinese film directed by Dan Duyu and starring Yin Mingzhu as the first spider spirit. It is based on an episode of the shenmo fantasy novel ''Journey to the West'', a Chinese literary classic written in the Ming Dynasty. The ten-reel silent film was produced by Shanghai Yingxi Company. It was thought to be a lost film, until 2011, when an original copy of ''The Cave of the Silken Web'' was discovered in the archives of the National Library in Mo i Rana, Norway. The film was presented at the Films from the South 2013 festival in Oslo. Roughly three-quarters of the film is preserved, the first reel and a section in the middle is lost. The Norwegian copy has retained the original Chinese intertitles, but includes additional jokes in Norwegian written for the local audience. Shi Dongshan
Shi Dongshan (December 29, 1902 – February 23, 1955), born Shi Kuangshao, was one of the most prominent film directors and screenwriters in pre-Communist China, together with Chen Liting, Cai Chusheng, and Zheng Junli. His most notable film was '' Eight Thousand Li of Cloud and Moon'', released in 1947. He served in the Communist government after 1949, but was later persecuted and committed suicide in 1955.
