Yilan County, Heilongjiang
Yilan County (; IPA: ) is a county of Heilongjiang Province, Northeast China, it is under the administration of the prefecture-level city of Harbin, the capital of Heilongjiang. It is more than to the east-northeast of central Harbin. Its county seat, which is also called Yilan (Yilan Town, ''Yilan zhen''), is located near the confluence of the Mudan River (formerly known as the Hurka River) with the Sungari. The easternmost county-level division of Harbin City, it borders Fangzheng County to the southwest, Tonghe County to the west, as well as the prefecture-level cities of Yichun to the north, Jiamusi to the northeast, Qitaihe to the southeast, and Mudanjiang to the south. Yanji
Yanji (; Chosŏn'gŭl: 연길, ''Yeon-gil;'' Hangul: 옌지, ''Yenji;'' alternately romanized as Yenki) is a county-level city in the east of China's Jilin Province, and is the seat of the Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture. Its population is approximately 400,000 of which a significant portion is ethnic Korean. Yanji is a busy hub of transport and trade between China and North Korea. The city is home to Yanbian University, a comprehensive university and the only Project 211 university in Yanji. Yilan County, alternately spelled I-lan, is a County (Taiwan), county in northeastern Taiwan, Republic of China. Name The name ''Yilan'' derives from the Taiwanese indigenous peoples, indigenous Kavalan people. Other former names in reference to this area in the Yilan Plain include ''Kabalan'', ''Kavalan'', ''Kavaland'', ''kap-a-lan'', ''Yiland'' and ''Gilan''. Before 2009, the county's official name was transliterated as Ilan. History Early history Since early ages, many people have traveled from far places to Yilan. Taiwanese aborigines, Indigenous tribes that have settled in Yilan are Kavalan people and Atayal people. Yilan City (Mandarin pinyin: ''Yílán Shì''; Hokkien POJ: ''Gî-lân-chhī'') is a county-administered city and the county seat of Yilan County, Taiwan Province, Republic of China. The city lies on the north side of the Lanyang River. History The Yilan Plain in which the city is located has historically been referred to as Kapalan (), Kapsulan (; also 甲子蘭), Komalan (), etc. These names, as well as that of Yilan itself, were given to the sites by the Kavalan tribe of Taiwanese aborigines. The Yilan River () is a tributary of the Lanyang River in Yilan County, northeast Taiwan. It flows through Yilan for 25 kilometers. Fauna Three turtle species occur in the Yilan River: the native Chinese stripe-necked turtle and yellow pond turtle, and the introduced red-eared slider, which outnumbers the native species. Yılankale ( Turkish for "Castle of the Snakes" or "Snake Castle") is a late 12th–13th century Armenian castle in Adana Province of Turkey. It is known in Armenian as Levonkla ( "Levon's fortress") after its possible founder—King Leo (Levon) I the Magnificent (r. 1198/9–1219) of the Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia. Medieval Armenian names attached to the site are Kovara and Vaner. A hill castle, Yılankale is located on a rocky hill overlooking the east bank of the Ceyhan River, and the Bronze and Iron Age site of Sirkeli Höyük, six kilometers west of the town of Ceyhan. The building is locally known as the home of Shahmaran, a mythical creature half woman and half snake.
