Yewed, Oklahoma
Yewed is an unincorporated community in Alfalfa County, Oklahoma, United States. Yewed is east of Lambert. History Yewed was platted in 1902 and had a station on the Kansas City, Mexico and Orient Railway. The community applied for a Post Office under the name ''Dewey'' in honor of Admiral George Dewey. However, since another community - Dewey, Oklahoma - already had that name, the letters were reversed and the name ''Yewed'' was assigned to the community. The Post Office operated from December 24, 1898, to April 30, 1952. As of 1977, the community had an operational grain elevator and a population of two. George Dewey
George Dewey (December 26, 1837January 16, 1917) was Admiral of the Navy, the only person in United States history to have attained that rank. He is best known for his victory at the Battle of Manila Bay during the Spanish–American War, with the loss of only a single crewman on the American side. Dewey was born in Montpelier, Vermont. At age 15, Dewey's father enrolled him at Norwich University in Northfield, Vermont. Two years later Norwich expelled him for drunkenness and herding sheep into the barracks. The Kansas City, Mexico and Orient Railway, started in 1900 by American railroad entrepreneur Arthur Edward Stilwell, was the predecessor of the Chihuahua al Pacífico railroad in Mexico. It was intended to reach the Pacific Ocean at Topolobampo, Sinaloa. The United States portion was incorporated in 1900 as the Kansas City, Mexico, and Orient Railway. It was completed between Wichita, Kansas, and Alpine, Texas. Grading took place between El Dorado and Bazaar, Kansas. Primary shops were first located in Fairview, Oklahoma. In 1910, the Fairview shops were destroyed by fire and the shops were then re-established in Wichita. The railroad was forced into bankruptcy in 1912, but its receiver, William T. Lambert, Oklahoma
Lambert is a town in Alfalfa County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was six at the 2010 census. History The town of Lambert was named after Ambrose Lambert, who owned the original townsite. Lambert is contiguous to the similar small community of Yewed directly to its east. Part of the area known as the Cherokee Outlet, Lambert was originally part of Woods County after 1893 until the time of statehood in 1907, when the area became part of newly formed Alfalfa County. The Choctaw Northern railway (later owned by the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific ), which in 1901 became the county's first railroad, connected Lambert to the other Alfalfa county towns of Aline, Augusta, Ingersoll, Driftwood, Amorita, and on into Kansas.
