Yaldā Night
Yaldā Night ( fa, شب یلدا ''shab-e yalda'') or Chelle Night (also Chellah Night, fa, شب چلّه ''shab-e chelle'') is an ancient festival in Iran, Iraqi Kurdistan, Afghanistan, Azerbaijan and Turkey celebrated on the winter solstice. This corresponds to the night of December 20/21 (±1) in the Gregorian calendar, and to the night between the last day of the ninth month (''Azar'') and the first day of the tenth month ('' Dey'') of the Iranian solar calendar. The festival is celebrated in Iran and other historically Iranian-influenced regions, including Azerbaijan, Iraqi Kurdistan, Balochi areas, Afghanistan and Tajikistan. The longest and darkest night of the year is a time when friends and family gather together to eat, drink and read poetry (especially Hafez) and the Shahnameh until well after midnight. Yalda Hakim (born 26 June 1983) is an Australian broadcast journalist, news presenter, and documentary maker. After her family left Afghanistan and settled in Australia in 1986, she grew up in the western Sydney suburb of Parramatta and went on to study journalism. She started her career at SBS Television, moving to the BBC TV in 2012. Hakim predominantly presents on ''BBC World News''. Early life and education Hakim was born on 26 June 1983 in Kabul, Afghanistan. Her family fled the country during the Soviet–Afghan War when she was six months old. The family travelled on horseback overland to Pakistan with the help of people smugglers. Albert Edward Ismail Yelda ( syr, ܐܠܒܪܬ ܐܕܘܪܕ ܐܝܣܡܥܝܠ ܝܠܕܐ) (born 1959 Ramadi, Iraq) was Iraq's ambassador to the Vatican. Yelda, an ethnic Assyrian, belongs to the Ancient Church of the East. Prior to the United States-led 2003 invasion of Iraq, Yelda dedicated himself to the legal counsel and assistance projects for the Iraqi immigrants in London, England from 1987 until 2003, when he returned to Iraq. During his time in London, Yelda co-founded the anti- Baath organization the Iraqi Liberation Coalition with friend Ayad Allawi. In early 2004, he was appointed as Iraq's 14th new ambassador to the Vatican. In November 2004, Yelda met with Pope John Paul II and talked about the situation of the Christian minority in Iraq. Winter Jones, previously Tony Yalda, sometimes credited as Anthony Yalda (born March 25, 1981) is a non-binary Assyrian actor. Biography Jones was born to Assyrian parents in Beirut, Lebanon. Their family fled Lebanon after facing persecution during the Lebanese Civil War. Like most Assyrian refugees, their family arrived in Athens, Greece, seeking asylum.
