Yea Railway Station
Yea is a former railway station on the Mansfield railway line in Yea, Victoria, Australia. It opened with the line in November 1883 and closed with the line in November 1978. A refreshment room was provided at the station from 1891. In 1976, the platform was shortened from 91.5m to 85.5m. The tracks have been removed and the railway reserve has been turned into the Yea Railway Park. It includes the historic station building and about five hectares of parkland. There is a picnic shelter, barbecue, toilets, playground, skatepark, walking track and community reserve, and includes a Rotary park. The station building houses Blackthorn Textiles, a privately-run craft shop. The former goods shed is available for hire. The Yea Country Market is held in the park on the first Saturday of each month, and local artists hold an exhibition and sale in the goods sheds each Easter. Mansfield Railway Line
The Mansfield railway line is a closed branch railway line situated in the Hume region of Victoria, Australia. Constructed by the Victorian Railways, it branches from the Seymour line at station, and runs east from the town of to . The line was primarily built to provide a general goods and passenger service to townships in the area. History The line was opened in 6 stages from November 1883 to October 1891, and closed in November 1978. The first stage of the line was opened from to in 1883, being extended in stages from 1889 though , , and to reach in 1891. A short 7 kilometre long branch was also opened from Cathkin to in 1890, being extended another 7 kilometres to in 1909. Yea, Victoria
Yea ( ) is a town in Victoria, Australia north-east of the state capital Melbourne at the junction of the Goulburn Valley Highway and the Melba Highway, in the Shire of Murrindindi local government area. In an area originally inhabited by the Taungurung people, it was first visited by Europeans of the Hume and Hovell expedition in 1824, and within 15 years most of the land in the area had been taken up by graziers. Surveyed in 1855, the township grew as a service centre for grazing, gold-mining and timber-getting in the area. The town has had a fairly stable population (around 1,100) since 1900, though it now has a relatively old population. The town economy is based around servicing the farming sector, and tourism, with good road links but little public transport. The town has education supplied by three schools (state primary and high schools, and a Catholic primary). It has three churches, and active sporting clubs. Goods Shed
A goods shed is a railway building designed for storing goods before or after carriage in a train. A typical goods shed will have a track running through it to allow goods wagons to be unloaded under cover, although sometimes they were built alongside a track with possibly just a canopy over the door. There will also be a door to move goods to or from road wagons and vans, this sometimes is parallel to the rail track, or sometimes on the side opposite the rail track. Inside the shed will generally be a platform and sometimes a small crane to allow easier loading and unloading of wagons. Double track Some goods sheds had more than one track. If one were not adjacent to the unloading platform then the method of working the second siding would be to first empty the wagons adjacent to the platform, and then open the doors on their far side to access those on the second track. The Victorian Heritage Register (VHR) lists places deemed to be of cultural heritage significance to the State of Victoria, Australia. It has statutory weight under the Heritage Act 2017. The Minister for Planning is the responsible Minister. Heritage Victoria was established as the State Government listing and permit authority in 1995, replacing the original authority, the Historic Buildings Preservation Council, established in 1974.
