Vyatka Governorate (russian: Вятская губерния, udm, Ватка губерний, mhr, Виче губерний, tt-Cyrl, Вәтке губернасы) was a governorate of the Russian Empire and Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic, Russian SFSR, with its capital in city Vyatka (now known as Kirov), from 1796 to 1929. Yaransk (russian: Яра́нск; chm, Яраҥ, ''Yaraň'') is a town and the administrative center of Yaransky District in Kirov Oblast, Russia, located on the Yaran River ( Vyatka's basin), southwest of Kirov, the administrative center of the oblast. The first general census of the population of the Russian Empire in 1897 ( pre-reform Russian: ) was the first and only nation-wide census performed in the Russian Empire (the Grand Duchy of Finland was excluded). An uezd (also spelled uyezd; rus, уе́зд, p=ʊˈjest), or povit in a Ukrainian context ( uk, повіт), or Kreis in Baltic-German context, was a type of administrative subdivision of the Grand Duchy of Moscow, the Russian Empire, and the early Russian SFSR, which was in use from the 13th century.
