Yangebup is a southern suburb of Perth, Western Australia in the City of Cockburn. It takes its name from the nearby Yangebup Lake. History The name Yangebup was first recorded in 1841 and may be derived from the Aboriginal word, ''Yanget'', for the species of native flax or bullrush found around the lake. It was approved as the name for the suburb in 1977. Geography The suburb is located from the Perth central business district. It is bounded by the freight rail line and North Lake Road to the north, Hammond Road to the east, Beeliar Drive to the south and Stock Road to the west. City Of Cockburn
The City of Cockburn ( ) is a local government area in the southern suburbs of the Western Australian capital city of Perth about south of Fremantle and about south of Perth's central business district. The City covers an area of and had a population of over 104,000 as at the 2016 Census. History Cockburn is named after Cockburn Sound, which was named in 1827 by Captain James Stirling after Admiral Sir George Cockburn. Sir George was born in London in 1772 and was a renowned British naval officer, eventually becoming Admiral of the Fleet and First Sea Lord. He served under Horatio Nelson during the war with France, but came to public attention and was granted his knighthood for his service in the War of 1812, in particular for the burning of Washington in 1814. Beeliar Regional Park is a conservation park approximately south of the central business district in Perth, Western Australia, located within the Citys of Cockburn, Kwinana and Melville. The regional park is named after the indigenous Beeliar people of the area. In Western Australia, regional parks consist of areas of land that have been identified as having outstanding conservation, landscape and recreation values. The park contains remnants of the Beeliar Wetlands, part of the once widespread Swan Coastal Plain. Beeliar is one of eleven regional parks in the Perth region of Western Australia. Aboriginal Australians are the various Indigenous peoples of the Australian mainland and many of its islands, such as Tasmania, Fraser Island, Hinchinbrook Island, the Tiwi Islands, and Groote Eylandt, but excluding the Torres Strait Islands. Yangebup Lake is a freshwater lake in the suburb of Yangebup, south-west of the central business district of Perth, the capital of Western Australia. It is part of Beeliar Regional Park. Overview Yangebup Lake's name is derived from the Nyungar word for the locally-growing bullrush (''Typha domingensis''), ''yanget''. The lake and its name were first recorded by European settlers in 1841 while the suburb of Yangebup officially received its name in 1977. The same naming origins incidentally apply for Lake Yanchep and its eponymous suburb, Yanchep, located in the north of Perth. Beeliar is a suburb of Perth, Western Australia, located within the City of Cockburn. The name refers to the Beeliar people, a group of Aboriginal Australians who had land rights over the southern half of Perth's metropolitan area. The suburb contains the Thomsons Lake Nature Reserve. "Beeliar" is a Noongar word that translates to "river" or "water running through". The suburb was named after an early settler-colonialist, Robert Menli Lyon, who recorded and interacted with the local Aboriginal group in the area circa the nineteenth century. Before European contact, the suburb was occupied by the Beeliar group of the Whadjuk nation, who are part of the broader Noongar language region.
