The Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sarawak, also known as the Governor of Sarawak, is the ceremonial head of state of Sarawak. The Yang di-Pertua Negeri is styled (). The official residence of the Governor is The Astana, located on the north bank of the Sarawak River in Kuching. The current office bearer, Abdul Taib Mahmud, was sworn in on 1 March 2014. He received the credentials as the new Yang di-Pertua Negeri on 28 February, and took the oath of office on the following day. He was re-appointed as Governor on 28 February 2018 for the 2nd term. Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg bin Abang Sapiee ( ms, ابڠ حاج اوڤيڠ بن ابڠ شافعي, label= Jawi, script=arab, italic=unset; 7 October 1905 – 28 March 1969) was a Malaysian politician who served as the first Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Sarawak from September 1963 to his death in March 1969. He assumed the newly established post following Sarawak's independence from the Great Britain and the formation of Malaysia in 1963. Tuanku Bujang bin Tuanku Othman (12 December 1898 – 28 November 1986) was the second Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Sarawak (Governor of Sarawak) from 1969 to 1977. Early life Born to a renowned Malay family in Sibu with distant Hadhrami Arab ancestry, he was educated in a Malay school and later joined the Sarawak Civil Service as a Native Officer in 1934. He was awarded the title of "Datu" in June 1954, and a year later was promoted to Sarawak Administrative Service as an officer and he later retired from Sarawak Government Civil Service in December 1960.
