Yakima
Yakima ( or ) is a city in and the county seat of Yakima County, Washington, and the state's 11th-largest city by population. As of the 2020 census, the city had a total population of 96,968 and a metropolitan population of 256,728. The unincorporated suburban areas of West Valley and Terrace Heights are considered a part of greater Yakima. Yakima is about southeast of Mount Rainier in Washington. It is situated in the Yakima Valley, a productive agricultural region noted for apple, wine, and hop production. As of 2011, the Yakima Valley produces 77% of all hops grown in the United States. The name Yakima originates from the Yakama Nation Native American tribe, whose reservation is located south of the city. The Yakama Indian Reservation (spelled Yakima until 1994) is a Native American reservation in Washington state of the federally recognized tribe known as the Confederated Tribes and Bands of the Yakama Nation. The tribe is made up of Klikitat, Palus, Wallawalla, Wanapam, Wenatchi, Wishram, and Yakama peoples. Geography The reservation is located on the east side of the Cascade Mountains in southern Washington state. The eastern portion of Mount Adams lies within this territory. Terrace Heights is a census-designated place (CDP) in Yakima County, Washington, United States. The population was 6,937 at the 2010 census. It is essentially a suburb of the city of Yakima. Geography Terrace Heights is located at (46.606682, -120.454026). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 8.2 square miles (21.2 km2), of which, 7.9 square miles (20.5 km2) of it is land and 0.3 square miles (0.8 km2) of it (3.66%) is water. Area code 509 is the telephone area code for the eastern two-thirds of the state of Washington. The western boundary of 509 roughly follows the Cascades. The 509 area code includes Spokane, the Tri-Cities ( Richland, Pasco, and Kennewick), Ellensburg, Yakima, Walla Walla, and Wenatchee. The 509 code was created in a split from 206, originally the area code for all of Washington, in a flash-cut on January 1, 1957. This part of Washington is not as densely populated as the west, and the great majority of the state's landlines and cell phones are located west of the Cascades. As a result, while western Washington went from one area code to four during the 1990s, 509 has remained unchanged for over 60 years.
