Yuri's Day (2008 Film)
''Yuri's Day'' (russian: Юрьев день, Yuriev den) is a 2008 Russian drama film directed by Kirill Serebrennikov. The film won the Grand Prix at the Warsaw International Film Festival. Plot Before leaving for a permanent residence in Germany, famous opera singer Lyuba (Kseniya Rappoport) brings her son Andryusha (Roman Shmakov) to the Russian hinterland to say goodbye to her native home. For her these places represent beautiful romanticism of Russian poetry. The son goes to see an exposition of the local kremlin and disappears. Lyuba first looks for her son, and then remains in the town and waits for her son to return. Gradually she becomes a different person. Opera singer Lyubov loses her son, voice, destiny and transforms into a coarse cleaner Lucy. And in this new person additional qualities appear. Kirill Serebrennikov
Kirill Semyonovich Serebrennikov (russian: Кирилл Семёнович Серебренников; born 7 September 1969) is a Russian stage and film director and theatre designer. Since 2012, he has been the artistic director of the Gogol Center in Moscow. He is one of Russia's leading theatre and cinema directors and winner of numerous international awards. In 2017 he was arrested for alleged embezzlement of the state funds given to the Seventh Studio, a cultural institution he headed. Serebrennikov spent almost 2 years under house arrest. A key witness confessed that she made accusations under pressure from the investigators, and the judge was changed. Media, international cultural community and human rights activists unanimously considered the case politically motivated and fabricated because Serebrennikov was known for his liberal and LGBT-friendly stances that opposes Russian official conservative positions. Locarno Festival
The Locarno Film Festival is an annual film festival, held every August in Locarno, Switzerland. Founded in 1946, the festival screens films in various competitive and non-competitive sections, including feature-length narrative, documentary, short, avant-garde, and retrospective programs. The Piazza Grande section is held in an open-air venue that seats 8,000 spectators. The top prize of the festival is the Golden Leopard, awarded to the best film in the International Competition.
