You Are The Girl
"You Are the Girl" is a 1987 song by the Cars, from their album ''Door to Door''. It was released as a single in August 1987, reaching number 17 on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100. It also reached number 2 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, and number 12 on the Adult Contemporary chart. It was the Cars' 13th and final Top 40 hit. Background Rhythm guitarist and principal songwriter Ric Ocasek shares lead vocals with bassist Benjamin Orr on "You Are the Girl". Both singers had recently cracked the Top 40 with solo hits, Ocasek with 1986's " Emotion in Motion" and Orr with 1987's " Stay the Night". "You Are the Girl" was the Cars' first—and last—Top 40 hit after their 1987 regrouping following the band members' three-year hiatus to focus on solo work. The Cars
The Cars were an American rock band formed in Boston in 1976. Emerging from the new wave scene in the late 1970s, they consisted of Ric Ocasek ( rhythm guitar), Benjamin Orr (bass guitar), Elliot Easton (lead guitar), Greg Hawkes (keyboards), and David Robinson ( drums). Ocasek and Orr shared lead vocals, and Ocasek was the band's principal songwriter and leader. The Cars were at the forefront of the merger of 1970s guitar-oriented rock with the new synthesizer-oriented pop that became popular in the early 1980s. "Stay the Night" is the debut solo single by the Cars vocalist and bassist Benjamin Orr, released in 1986 from his debut solo album '' The Lace''. The song reached No. 24 on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100 chart in early 1987, becoming Orr's only top 40 hit as a solo artist. Background Prior to recording his solo album, Orr had been a founding member, along with singer and songwriter Ric Ocasek of the Cars. The Cars' first top 40 hit, "Just What I Needed", featured Orr on lead vocals, as did their biggest hit, " Drive", from 1984's '' Heartbeat City''. The Kent Music Report was a weekly record chart of Australian music singles and albums which was compiled by music enthusiast David Kent from May 1974 through to January 1999. The chart was re-branded the Australian Music Report (AMR) in July 1987. From June 1988, the Australian Recording Industry Association, which had been using the top 50 portion of the report under licence since mid-1983, chose to produce their own listing as the ARIA Charts. Before the Kent Report, ''Go-Set'' magazine published weekly Top-40 Singles from 1966, and Album charts from 1970 until the magazine's demise in August 1974. David Kent later published Australian charts from 1940 to 1973 in a retrospective fashion, using state by state chart data obtained from various Australian radio stations. "Coming Up You" is a song by American rock band the Cars from their sixth studio album, ''Door to Door'' (1987). It was written by Ric Ocasek and sung by Benjamin Orr. Release "Coming Up You" was released as a single in the United States and Australia, backed with the fellow ''Door to Door'' track "Double Trouble". The third and final single from ''Door to Door'' (after the top-20 entry "You Are the Girl" and its less successful follow-up " Strap Me In"), the song peaked at number 74 on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100 (a slight improvement from the performance of "Strap Me In") and number 37 on the Adult Contemporary chart. However, unlike its predecessors, it failed to chart at all on the Mainstream Rock chart. It is also among the very few songs by the group not to feature a promotional video. The MTV Video Music Awards (commonly abbreviated as the VMAs) is an award show presented by the cable channel MTV to honour the best in the music video medium.
