York Lions Football
The York Lions Football team represents York University in Toronto, Ontario in the sport of Canadian football in U Sports. The York Lions U Sports football, football team has been in continuous operation since 1968 and are one of two teams currently playing in U Sports football to have never won a Yates Cup, conference championship. The other team, the Sherbrooke Vert et Or football, Sherbrooke Vert et Or, did not begin their current program until 2003. The Lions were previously known as the York Yeomen until all York varsity teams changed their nicknames to the Lions in 2003. Sammy Okpro
Sammy Okpro (born May 2, 1984) is the defensive coordinator for York University's football team, the York Lions of U Sports. He played CIS football as a defensive back for the Concordia Stingers from 2004 to 2007. Professionally, he was drafted by the Edmonton Eskimos in the fourth round of the 2008 CFL Draft and spent parts of three years with the team. Early life Okpro first played youth football with Alexander Park as a running back and safety from 1992 to 1997. He then played for the North Shore Lions during high school from 1998 to 1999 where he made the All-Star Team in 1999. He was a member of the North Shore Mustangs from 2000 to 2001 where he was the Midget League M.V.P. Defense in 2001 and made the All-Star Team in both 2000 and 2001. In CEGEP, he played for the Vanier College Cheetahs from 2002 to 2003. Sherbrooke Vert Et Or Football
The Sherbrooke Vert et Or football team represents the Université de Sherbrooke in Sherbrooke, Quebec in the sport of Canadian football in the RSEQ conference of U Sports. The Sherbrooke football team first began play in 1971 in the Quebec Universities Athletic Association, but only played for three seasons. The program was re-started in 2003 and has been in continuous operation since then. The Vert et Or football team is one of two U Sports football programs to have never won a conference championship, with the other being the York Lions. 2005 CIS Football Season
The 2005 CIS football season began on September 1, 2005, and concluded with the 41st Vanier Cup national championship on December 3 at Ivor Wynne Stadium in Hamilton, Ontario, with the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks winning their second championship. Twenty-seven universities across Canada competed in CIS football this season, the highest level of amateur play in Canadian football, under the auspices of Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS). Waterloo Warriors Football
The Waterloo Warriors football team represents the University of Waterloo in the sport of Canadian football in U Sports. The Warriors U Sports football program has been in operation since 1957, winning two Yates Cup conference championships in 1997 and 1999. Currently, they are one of six teams to have never appeared in a Vanier Cup game and the longest tenured program in the OUA to have never qualified for the national championship game. Recent history In the 21st century, the program struggled to compete in the OUA, having not qualified for the playoffs from 2004 to 2017 and not having a winning record since 2001. The program then made national headlines in 2010 after it was discovered that a student athlete was in possession of steroids and human growth hormone in March 2010. Warren Craney
Warren Craney is the former head coach for York University's football team, the York Lions, a position he has held since the 2010. He has also been a coach for the Canada national football junior team, winning a gold medal as the team's defensive coordinator in 2012 and winning the championship as the team's head coach in 2016. Concordia Stingers Football
The Concordia Stingers football team represents Concordia University in Montreal, Quebec in the sport of Canadian football in the RSEQ conference of U Sports. The Concordia Stingers football program was created in 1974 from the amalgamation of the Loyola Warriors and Sir George Williams Georgians. The team has won three Dunsmore Cup conference championships, in 1982, 1993, and 1998. In 1998, the Stingers also made their first and only appearance in the national championship which was a loss to the Saskatchewan Huskies in the 34th Vanier Cup game. Saint Mary's Huskies Football
The Saint Mary's Huskies football team represents Saint Mary's University in Halifax, Nova Scotia in the sport of Canadian football in U Sports. The Huskies have been the most successful in the Atlantic University Sport (AUS) conference of U Sports football, reaching the Vanier Cup championship game nine times and winning three times (1973, 2001, 2002), both marks being the highest in the AUS. The program also has the most Jewett Trophy conference championships, winning 24 times in 32 appearances. Queen's Golden Gaels
The Queen's Gaels (also known as the Queen's Golden Gaels) is the Athletics program representing Queen's University at Kingston in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. Team colours are blue, red, and gold.
