Yingying's Biography
The ''Biography of Ying-ying'' (), also translated as the ''Story of Yingying'', by Yuan Zhen, is a Tang dynasty ''chuanqi'' tale. It tells the story of a relationship conflicted between love and duty between a 16-year-old girl and a 21-year-old student. It is considered to be one of the first works of fiction in Chinese literature. Role in history of Chinese literature Yuan Zhen pioneered psychological exploration and possibilities of plot development. His tale mixed narration, poetry and letters from one character to another to demonstrate emotion rather than describe it, making it in one sense an epistolary novel. The work was also innovative because its characters, in the terms suggested by E.M. Forster, are "round" rather than "flat", that is, unlike the characters in the earlier ''zhiguai'' or ''zhiren'' tales, are not built around a single idea or quality, but have the power to surprise readers. Pauline Yu
Pauline Yu (; born 1949) is an American scholar of Chinese literature and culture noted for her contributions to the study of classical Chinese poetry and comparative literature. She is also known for her research and advocacy on issues in the humanities. Early life Yu was born in 1949 in Rochester, New York, to two recent immigrants from China, Dr. Paul N. Yu, a cardiologist who was later elected president of the American Heart Association; and Dr. I Ling Tang, a pediatrician. Her account of her father's funeral in Taiwan was published in ''The American Scholar'' in 2013. Yu attended public schools in the Rochester suburb of Brighton and was inducted into the first class of the Brighton High School Hall of Fame in 2006. Yu received her B.A. in modern French and German history and literature from Harvard University. While in college she studied for a year at the Free University of Berlin. Stephen Owen (academic)
Stephen Owen (born October 30, 1946) is an American sinologist specializing in Chinese literature, particularly Tang dynasty poetry and comparative poetics. He taught Chinese literature and comparative literature at Harvard University and is James Bryant Conant University Professor, Emeritus; becoming emeritus before he was one of only 25 Harvard University Professors. He is a member of American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a member of American Philosophical Society. Owen graduated from Yale University in 1968 and continued at Yale as a graduate student, receiving his doctorate in 1972 under Hans Fränkel. He taught at Yale from 1972 to 1982, when he went to Harvard. He has been a Fulbright Scholar and held a Guggenheim Fellowship, among many other awards and honors. In 2015, he completed a six-volume annotated translation of the complete poems of Du Fu. He was jointly awarded the 2018 Tang Prize in Sinology with Yoshinobu Shiba. James Robert Hightower
James Robert Hightower (7 May 19158 January 2006) was an American sinologist. He was a professor of Chinese at Harvard University who specialized in the translation of Chinese literature. Although he spent his youth in Colorado, Hightower lived most of his life in Cambridge, Massachusetts studying and teaching at Harvard. Life Hightower was born to Loris Denzil and Berta (née McKedy) Hightower in Sulphur, Oklahoma, where Loris worked as a school principal. Hightower's mother died two years later in 1917, prompting his father to return home to Salida, Colorado to take up a position as school superintendent. E.
