Yarengian Supergorizont
The Yarenskian Gorizont ("Yarenskian Horizon") is a major biostratigraphic unit in Russia corresponding to Upper Olenekian-age terrestrial sediments. It lies above the Ustmylian Gorizont of the Vetlugian Supergorizont, and is located below a short unconformity overlain by the Donguz Gorizont. Some paleontologists elevate the Yarenskian to a supergorizont and subdivide it into two smaller units: the older Fedorovskian Gorizont and the younger Gamskian Gorizont. Others prefer to consider the Fedorovskian and Gamskian to be subgorizonts or members of the Yarenskian. Vertebrate index fossils of the Fedorovskian include the lungfish ''Gnathorhiza,'' the trematosaurid ''Inflectosaurus,'' and the procolophonid '' Burtensia''. In the Gamskian, these index fossils are replaced by ''Ceratodus'', ''Trematosaurus'', and ''Kapes'', respectively. ''Parotosuchus'' is an extinct genus of capitosaurian temnospondyl amphibians within the family (biology), family Mastodonsauridae. Fossils are known from the Early Triassic of Europe, Africa, Australia, and Antarctica. It was about long and likely lived in aquatic environments such as lakes and rivers. ''Parotosuchus'' was covered in a scaly skin, unlike the smooth skin of modern-day amphibians, and probably moved with an eel-like motion in the water. ''Parotosuchus'' was originally named ''Parotosaurus''. However, the name ''Parotosaurus'' was preoccupied by a genus of skinks, and in 1968 the name ''Parotosuchus'' was proposed as a replacement. The name ''Archotosaurus'' was also proposed as a replacement name in 1976, although the author who proposed this was unaware that ''Parotosuchus'' was already in use. ''Trematosaurus'' is an extinct genus of trematosaurid temnospondyl amphibian found in Germany and Russia. It was first named by Hermann Burmeister in 1849 and the type species is ''Trematosaurus brauni''. History of study ''Trematosaurus'' was one of the first temnospondyls to be described. The type locality, called Merkel's Quarry, is in east-central Germany at Bernburg an der Saale within the Bausandstein (Olenekian) and was collected for several decades from the 1840s into the early 20th century, producing extensive cranial remains, although the majority of these are preserved as internal molds (steinkerns) or natural molds. The Don ( rus, Дон, p=don) is the fifth-longest river in Europe. Flowing from Central Russia to the Sea of Azov in Southern Russia, it is one of Russia's largest rivers and played an important role for traders from the Byzantine Empire.
