Xinjiang Independence
The East Turkestan independence movement ( ug, شەرقىي تۈركىستان مۇستەقىللىق ھەرىكىتى; zh, s=东突厥斯坦独立运动) is a political movement that seeks the independence of East Turkestan, a large and sparsely-populated region in northwest China, as an ethnostate for the Uyghur people. The region is currently administered as a province-level subdivision of the People's Republic of China (PRC), under the official name Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR). Within the movement, there is widespread support for the region to be renamed, since "Xinjiang" (meaning "new frontier" in Chinese) is seen by independence activists as a colonial name. "East Turkestan" is the best-known proposed name. "Uyghurstan" is another well-known proposed name. Victor Gao
Gao Zhikai (; born 1962) is a Chinese lawyer, academic and media spokesman for the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). He is the Vice President of the Beijing based Center for China and Globalization (CCG), and Chair Professor of Soochow University. He was formerly a translator for the CCP leader Deng Xiaoping. Biography Gao graduated with a J.D. degree from Yale Law School. He received an M.A. in political science from Yale Graduate School. He graduated with a B.A. and M.A. in English Language and Literature from Soochow University and Beijing University of Foreign Studies respectively. Gao was a translator for Deng Xiaoping from 1983 to 1988. He is a Director of the China National Association of International Studies and an Executive Director of Beijing Private Equity Association. Center For China And Globalization
The Center for China and Globalization (CCG) is a Chinese think tank based in Beijing. It was founded in 2008 by a committee of the Western Returned Scholars Association, an organization under the United Front Work Department. CCG is a member of an alliance of think tanks, coordinated by the International Liaison Department of the Chinese Communist Party, that support the Belt and Road Initiative. Leadership CCG was founded by Wang Huiyao and Mable Miao Lu, scholars who are reported to have ties to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). Wang is a central committee member of the Jiusan Society, one of the country's eight legally-permitted minor political parties under the direction of the CCP. Wang has also served as a State Counselor. Nury Turkel
Nury Ablikim Turkel (; ; born 1970) is a Uyghur American attorney, public official and human rights advocate based in Washington, D.C. He is currently the Chair of the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom. Turkel was born in Kashgar, Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. After his undergraduate graduation in 1995, he moved to the United States. He was president of the Uyghur American Association and is currently serving as the chairman of the board for the Uyghur Human Rights Project, a Washington, D.C.-based project for Uyghur human rights research and documentation. In 2020, Turkel was appointed a commissioner on the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom by Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. Turkel is the first U.S.-educated Uyghur lawyer and the first Uyghur American to be appointed to a political position in the United States.
