X Marks The Spot (1931 Film)
''X Marks the Spot'' is a 1931 American pre-Code crime drama film directed by Erle C. Kenton and released by Tiffany Pictures, which operated from 1921 to 1932. The story concerns a newspaper reporter indebted to a gangster for raising the money to save his little girl's life. The source material was remade into a 1942 film of the same name. Helen Parrish appeared in both versions. Virginia Lee Corbin
Virginia Lee Corbin (December 5, 1910 – June 4, 1942) was an American silent film actress. Early years Corbin was born Laverne Virginia Corbin in Prescott, Arizona to Leon Ernest Corbin and Virginia Frances (Cox) Corbin, and she had a sister, Ruth Emilie (Corbin) Miehle De Vries Lipari. Career Corbin began her career as a child actress in 1916, when she was billed as Baby Virginia Corbin. When she was six years old, she starred in fairy-tale films made by the William Fox Company. The success of ''Jack and the Beanstalk'' (1917) was such that Fox signed Corbin to a five-year contract. In addition to her salary, the contract specified that the company would provide instruction for her education. She went on to become a youthful flapper in the 1920s. Clarence Muse (October 14, 1889 – October 13, 1979) was an American actor, screenwriter, director, singer, and composer. He was the first African American to appear in a starring role in a film, 1929's ''Hearts in Dixie''. He acted for 50 years, and appeared in more than 150 films. He was inducted into the Black Filmmakers Hall of Fame in 1973. Life and career Born in Baltimore, Maryland, the son of Alexander and Mary Muse, he studied at Dickinson School of Law in Carlisle, Pennsylvania for one year in 1908. He left because he believed he could not make a living in law as an African American. He later received an honorary doctorate of laws from Dickinson School of Law in 1978. Joyce Coad (April 14, 1917 – May 3, 1987) was a child actress in motion pictures. Child prodigy Coad was the survivor of triplets whose parents died shortly after she was born. She was adopted by a childless couple and taken to Los Angeles, California. Her foster father was Raymond E. Coad. By the age of five she became a reader of children's stories on radio station KHJ in Los Angeles with the Beacon Light Company. It was commented that Coad's genius was first observed when she began to commit to memory songs, speeches, and music she heard over the radio.
