XVI International Chopin Piano Competition
The XVI International Chopin Piano Competition ( pl, XVI Międzynarodowy Konkurs Pianistyczny im. Fryderyka Chopina) was held in Warsaw, Poland from 3 to 20 October 2010, for the first time organized by the Fryderyk Chopin Institute. Prize winners' concerts were held October 21–23. The first prize was awarded to Yulianna Avdeeva. Winners The competition consisted of three stages and a final. National Philharmonic In Warsaw
The National Philharmonic in Warsaw (Polish: ''Filharmonia Narodowa w Warszawie'') is a Polish cultural institution, located at 5 Jasna Street in Warsaw. The building was built between 1900 and 1901, under the direction of Karol Kozłowski, to be reconstructed in 1955 by Eugeniusz Szparkowski. The director of the institution is Wojciech Nowak. The VII International Chopin Piano Competition ( pl, VII Międzynarodowy Konkurs Pianistyczny im. Fryderyka Chopina) was held from 21 February to 16 March 1965 in Warsaw. The competition was won by Martha Argerich of Argentina, becoming the first and so far only South American winner. Katarzyna Popowa-Zydroń
Katarzyna Popowa-Zydroń (Bulgarian: Екатерина Попова) (born 30 April 1948 in Sofia) is a Polish pianist of Bulgarian descent. She studied at the Poznań Music Academy, then graduated with honours from the State High School of Music (Academy of Music) in Gdańsk, in Professor Zbigniew Sliwinski's class, in 1973. She completed her postgraduate studies in the University of Music and Performing Arts, Vienna, Hochschule für Musik und darstellende Kunst in Vienna, in Professor Alexander Jenner's class. She was a prizewinner of the Polish Competitions: 4th Polish Festival of Young Musicians, 2nd Polish Competition of Piano Music; obtained an honorable mention at the IX International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw in 1975, and entered the semifinals of the Piano Competition in Terni, Italy, 1975, and of the ARD Piano Competition in Munich in 1978. Piotr Paleczny (born 10 May 1946 in Rybnik, Poland) is a Polish classical pianist, winner of the 3rd prize of the VIII International Chopin Piano Competition in 1970. The XII International Chopin Piano Competition ( pl, XII Międzynarodowy Konkurs Pianistyczny im. Fryderyka Chopina) was held from 1 to 20 October 1990 in Warsaw. For the first time in the history of the competition, the first prize was not awarded. Awards The competition consisted of three stages and a final. Kevin Kenner
Kevin Kenner (born May 19, 1963 in Coronado, California) is an American concert pianist. Biography At the age of 17, Kenner was a finalist at the X International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw. Ten years later, in 1990 he returned to Warsaw and achieved second place at the XII International Chopin Piano Competition and the Special Prize for the Best Performance of a Polonaise. No first prize was awarded that year. Earlier that year he won the third prize at the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. Other awards include the International Terence Judd Award (London, 1990), prize for Best Performance of Chamber Music (shared with three others) at the 1989 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, and the Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition (Salt Lake City, Utah 1988). Andrzej Jasiński (born 23 October 1936 in Częstochowa) is a Polish pianist. In 1959 he graduated with honors from the University of Music in Katowice in the piano class of Władysława Markiewiczówna. The following year he won the Maria Canals Competition, and subsequently completed his training under Magda Tagliaferro. V International Chopin Piano Competition
The V International Chopin Piano Competition ( pl, V Międzynarodowy Konkurs Pianistyczny im. Fryderyka Chopina) was held from 21 February to 20 March 1955 in Warsaw. The competition was won by Adam Harasiewicz of Poland. The competition was held in the rebuilt National Philharmonic, the date having been moved from October 1954 to February 1955, temporarily increasing the gap between two competitions to six years. Competitors were accommodated in the Hotel Polonia, where 70 practice pianos were installed. Awards The competition consisted of three elimination stages, with 74, 41 and 21 pianists respectively. Vladimir Ashkenazy was considered the favorite up until the final stage, where he performed less strongly, ultimately coming in second after Adam Harasiewicz. Adam Harasiewicz
Adam Harasiewicz (born 1 July 1932) is a Polish people, Polish classical music, classical concert pianist. Harasiewicz was born in Chodziez, Poland. After studying violin for two months, at the age of 10 he began piano study, and at age 15 he obtained first prize in a contest at Rzeszów. At 18 he entered the State Higher School of Music in Kraków (at present Academy of Music in Kraków) where he studied with Zbigniew Drzewiecki. Harasiewicz studied with Drzewiecki for six years, and became pre-eminent as an interpreter of Chopin, excelling through a combination of superb technique, lyrical imagination, exceptional consistency of stylistic and idiomatic approach, and (through all of these) in playing of a characteristic temperament which identifies him as a true exponent of the Polish Romantic tradition. Nelson José Pinto Freire (; 18 October 19441 November 2021) was a Brazilian classical pianist. Regarded as one of the greatest pianists of his generation, he was noted for his "decorous piano playing" and "interpretive depth". Philippe Entremont (born 7 June 1934) is a French classical pianist and conductor. His recordings as a pianist include concertos by Tchaikovsky, Maurice Ravel, Rachmaninoff, Saint-Saëns and others. Early life Philippe Entremont was born in Reims to musical parents, his mother being a ''Grand Prix'' pianist and his father an operatic conductor. Philippe first received piano lessons from his mother at the age of six. His father introduced him to the world of chamber and orchestral music. He studied in Paris with Marguerite Long, and entered the Conservatoire de Paris. He won prizes in sight-reading at age 12, chamber-music aged 14, and piano at 15.
