XUpdate
XUpdate is a lightweight XML query language for modifying XML data. After some early enthusiastic development by a small team, the development of the standard faltered around the end of 2000 and it has never found widespread adoption. However, it has found a niche market of users not content to wait for the XQuery Update Facility extension of the W3C standard, XQuery. XQuery Update Facility
XQuery Update Facility is an extension to the XML Query language, XQuery. It provides expressions that can be used to make changes to instances of the XQuery 1.0 and XPath 2.0 Data Model. It became a W3C Candidate Recommendation on 31 July 2009 and was finalised as Recommendation on 17 March 2011. A version to work with XQuery 3.0 was drafted, but was never completed, and is archived as a W3C Working Group Note. Implementations * BaseX - An open source XML Database and XQuery Processor; supported since Version 6.0 * DataDirect XQuery - a java-based commercial XQuery processor. Supported since Version 4.0 * EMC Documentum xDB - Native XML Database. XQuery Update Facility supported since Version 9.0 * eXist eXist-db (or eXist for short) is an open source software project for NoSQL databases built on XML technology. EXist
eXist-db (or eXist for short) is an open source software project for NoSQL databases built on XML technology. It is classified as both a NoSQL document-oriented database system and a native XML database (and it provides support for XML, JSON, HTML and Binary documents). Unlike most relational database management systems (RDBMS) and NoSQL databases, eXist-db provides XQuery and XSLT as its query and application programming languages. eXist-db is released under version 2.1 of the GNU LGPL. Features eXist-db allows software developers to persist XML/JSON/Binary documents without writing extensive middleware. eXist-db follows and extends many W3C XML standards such as XQuery. eXist-db also supports REST interfaces for interfacing with AJAX-type web forms. Applications such as XForms may save their data by using just a few lines of code. The WebDAV interface to eXist-db allows users to "drag and drop" XML files directly into the eXist-db database. eXist-db automatically indexes d ...

Query Language
Query languages, data query languages or database query languages (DQL) are computer languages used to make queries in databases and information systems. A well known example is the Structured Query Language (SQL). Types Broadly, query languages can be classified according to whether they are database query languages or information retrieval query languages. The difference is that a database query language attempts to give factual answers to factual questions, while an information retrieval query language attempts to find documents containing information that is relevant to an area of inquiry. Other types of query languages include: * Full-text. The simplest query language is treating all terms as bag of words that are to be matched with the postings in the inverted index and where subsequently ranking models are applied to retrieve the most relevant documents. Only tokens are defined in the CFG. Web search engines often use this approach. * Boolean. A query language that also s ...

XQuery
XQuery (XML Query) is a query and functional programming language that queries and transforms collections of structured and unstructured data, usually in the form of XML, text and with vendor-specific extensions for other data formats (JSON, binary, etc.). The language is developed by the XML Query working group of the W3C. The work is closely coordinated with the development of XSLT by the XSL Working Group; the two groups share responsibility for XPath, which is a subset of XQuery. XQuery 1.0 became a W3C Recommendation on January 23, 2007. XQuery 3.0 became a W3C Recommendation on April 8, 2014. XQuery 3.1 became a W3C Recommendation on March 21, 2017. Features XQuery is a functional, side effect-free, expression-oriented programming language with a simple type system, summed up by Kilpeläinen: XQuery provides the means to extract and manipulate data from XML documents or any data source that can be viewed as XML, such as relational databases or office documents. XQ ...

Sedna (database)
Sedna is an open-source database management system that provides native storage for XML data. The distinctive design decisions employed in Sedna are (i) schema-based clustering storage strategy for XML data and (ii) memory management based on layered address space.Ilya Taranov et al. Sedna: native XML database management system (internals overview). In ACM SIGMOD '10: Proceedings of the 36th international conference on Association for Computing Machinery's Special Interest Group on Management of Data, pages 1037-1045, New York, NY, USA, 2010. ACM. Data organization Data organization in Sedna is designed with the goal of providing a balance in performance between XML queries and updates execution. The two primary design decisions in data organization in Sedna are: # ''Direct'' pointers are used to represent XML node relationships such as parent, child, and sibling ones. Unlike relational-based approaches that require performing joins for traversing an XML document, traversi ...
