XI International Chopin Piano Competition
The XI International Chopin Piano Competition ( pl, XI Międzynarodowy Konkurs Pianistyczny im. Fryderyka Chopina) was held from 30 September to 20 October 1985 in Warsaw. For the first time, participants could choose to play on a Kawai or on a Yamaha piano, in addition to the Steinway and Bösendorfer that had been available before. Bechstein withdrew from the competition after its instrument was chosen just once during the 9th competition. Awards The competition consisted of three stages and a final. National Philharmonic In Warsaw
The National Philharmonic in Warsaw (Polish: ''Filharmonia Narodowa w Warszawie'') is a Polish cultural institution, located at 5 Jasna Street in Warsaw. The building was built between 1900 and 1901, under the direction of Karol Kozłowski, to be reconstructed in 1955 by Eugeniusz Szparkowski. The director of the institution is Wojciech Nowak. It is the main venue of the Warsaw National Philharmonic Orchestra. Since 1955, the institution hosts the International Chopin Piano Competition. Valentin Gheorghiu
Valentin Gheorghiu (; born 21 March 1928) is a Romanian classical pianist and composer. Biography Gheorghiu was born in Galaţi, Romania in 1928. He was first a pupil of Constanța Erbiceanu at the Bucharest Academy of Music and then of Lazare Lévy at the Conservatoire National de Musique in Paris, France France (), officially the French Republic ( ), is a country primarily located in Western Europe. Lev Vlassenko
Lev Nikolaevich Vlassenko (Russian: Лев Никола́евич Вла́сенко; 24 December 1928 – 24 August 1996), was a Soviet pianist and teacher. Biography Lev Vlassenko was born on 24 December 1928 in Tiflis, Georgian SSR, Soviet Union to Nikolai Appolonovich Vlassenko and Vera Solomonovna Benditskaya. Lev Vlassenko's first music teacher was his mother Vera. Lev entered the music school for gifted children in Tiflis in the class of Anastasia Davidovna Virsaladze - herself a pupil of the renowned Anna Yesipova. Lev began to play in public at an early age. At the age of ten years, he played Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 1 with renowned conductor Odysseas Dimitriadis. Charles Harper Webb is an American poet, professor, psychotherapist and former singer and guitarist. His most recent poetry collection is ''Shadow Ball'' (University of Pittsburgh Press, 2009). V International Chopin Piano Competition
The V International Chopin Piano Competition ( pl, V Międzynarodowy Konkurs Pianistyczny im. Fryderyka Chopina) was held from 21 February to 20 March 1955 in Warsaw. The competition was won by Adam Harasiewicz of Poland. The competition was held in the rebuilt National Philharmonic, the date having been moved from October 1954 to February 1955, temporarily increasing the gap between two competitions to six years. Competitors were accommodated in the Hotel Polonia, where 70 practice pianos were installed. Awards The competition consisted of three elimination stages, with 74, 41 and 21 pianists respectively. Vladimir Ashkenazy was considered the favorite up until the final stage, where he performed less strongly, ultimately coming in second after Adam Harasiewicz. Fou Ts'ong
Fou Ts'ong (; 10 March 1934 – 28 December 2020) was a Chinese-born British pianist who was the first pianist of his national origin to achieve international recognition. He came to prominence after winning third prize and the Polish Radio Prize for the best performance of mazurkas in the 1955 V International Chopin Piano Competition, and remained particularly known as an interpreter of Chopin's music. Early life Fou Ts'ong was born in Shanghai on 10 March 1934 to a family of intellectuals; his father was the translator Fu Lei. Takahiro Sonoda
, September 17, 1928 – October 7, 2004) was a Japanese classical pianist. Life Sonoda was born in 1928 in the town of Nogata, today a part of Tokyo and renamed Nakano City. He was first taught piano by his father, Kiyohide, a student of Robert Casadesus. After his father's death in 1936, Sonoda continued his lessons; three years later he came under the tutelage of Leo Sirota, then resident in Japan. After graduating from elementary school, he entered the Tokyo Academy of Music (later absorbed by the Tokyo University of the Arts). After the Pacific War, Sonoda began his career as a performer. He traveled to Europe in 1952 in the hopes of participating in the Geneva International Music Competition, but failed to place. Bernard Ringeissen
Bernard Ringeissen (born 15 May 1934) is a French classical pianist. He was born in Paris in 1934. His first teacher, at age 7, was Georges de Lausnay. He entered the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in 1947, aged 12, and won the Premier Prix when he was sixteen. He had further study with Marguerite Long and Jacques Février. In 1953, he temporarily retired from public performance, to focus on music competition. In 1954, he won equal 2nd Prize with Sergio Scopelliti at the Alfredo Casella Competition in Naples. He also won the International Music Performance Competition in Geneva that year. Piotr Paleczny (born 10 May 1946 in Rybnik, Poland) is a Polish classical pianist, winner of the 3rd prize of the VIII International Chopin Piano Competition in 1970. Victor Merzhanov
Victor Karpovich Merzhanov (russian: Ви́ктор Ка́рпович Мержа́нов) (15 August 191920 December 2012) was a Russian pianist and People's Artist of the USSR (1990). Biography Merzhanov was born in Tambov and studied at Tambov Musical College with Solomon Starikov and Alexander Poltoratsky. Between 1936-1941 he studied at the Moscow Conservatory in the classes of Samuil Feinberg (piano) and Alexander Goedicke (organ), graduating with distinction. He achieved international recognition as a pianist in 1945 when he won the first prize (shared with Sviatoslav Richter) at the Third All-Soviet-Union Piano Competition. In 1949, he was placed tenth at the IV International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw. Merzhanov became a Moscow Philharmony soloist in 1946. Karl-Heinz Kämmerling
Karl-Heinz Kämmerling (6 May 1930 – 14 June 2012) was a notable German academic teacher of classical pianists, who trained pianists at the Mozarteum in Salzburg and the Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien Hannover for careers as performers and academic teachers, particularly in the early training of highly gifted students. Career Kämmerling was born in Dessau and studied at the Hochschule für Musik Leipzig with Anton Rohden and Hugo Steurer.
