Guanche Language
Guanche is an extinct language that was spoken by the Guanches of the Canary Islands until the 16th or 17th century. It died out after the conquest of the Canary Islands as the Guanche ethnic group was assimilated into the dominant Spanish culture. The Guanche language is known today through sentences and individual words that were recorded by early geographers, as well as through several place-names and some Guanche words that were retained in the Canary Islanders' Spanish. Classification Guanche has not been classified with any certainty. Many linguists propose that Guanche was likely a Berber language, or at least related to the Berber languages. However, recognizable Berber words are primarily agricultural or livestock vocabulary, whereas no Berber grammatical inflections have been identified, and there is a large stock of vocabulary that does not bear any resemblance to Berber whatsoever. Xiomara Vidal (born 1955 in Santiago de Cuba) is a Cuban trovadora. She has over 30 years experience as a composer and performer of traditional Cuban music. She took her first steps in Santiago de Cuba's Cabildo Theatrical School along with many other actors of national renown. Xiomara Soledad Scott (died 16 July 2017) was a Venezuelan nurse killed during the 2017 protests in Venezuela. Xiomara Reyes (born October 28, 1973, in Havana, Cuba) is a former principal dancer with American Ballet Theatre. After retiring from performing she was appointed the Head of School of The Washington Ballet School. Training and Career Born in Cuba, Reyes trained at Havana Vocational School of Ballet and the Cuban National Ballet School, where she studied with Loipa Araujo. While in school, Reyes performed lead roles in ''The Three Musketeers'' at 15, ''Don Quixote'' at 16, and ''Coppelia'' at 17. Guacimara is the name of a strong warrior Guanche woman, daughter of the king or Mencey of the Menceyato of Anaga in the Canary Islands, at a time prior to the arrival of the European conquerors at the end of the XV century. It appears for the first time as a personage in Antonio de Viana's epic poem '' Antigüedades de las Islas Afortunadas'' published in 1604, from which it was copied by authors like Tomás Arias Marín de Cubas or José de Viera y Clavijo, so that there is no evidence of it being historical.
