Xalko
''Xalko'' is a Canadian documentary film, directed by Sami Mermer and Hind Benchekroun and released in 2018. The film profiles Mermer's own birthplace of Xalko, a Kurdish village in Turkey where the women are preserving Kurdish tradition after most of the men have left as refugees from the Kurdish–Turkish conflict. The film premiered in November 2018 at the Montreal International Documentary Festival. Sami Mermer
Sami Mermer is a Turkish Canadian documentary filmmaker of Kurdish descent. Biography Mermer was born in Turkey. He studied mathematics at the University of Ankara from 1994 to 1996 and from 1996 to 2000, Environment Engineering at the University of Istanbul. He pursued cinema studies at the University of Mesopotamia from 1998 to 2000 followed by studies of French and Cinema Studies at the University of Quebec from 2000 to 2002. He worked on several documentaries and fiction films, as a director and director of photography. He was co-writer and assistant director of ''Ax (the land)'', winner of several prizes and awarded best film in the 2000 Hamburg Film Festival. In Grand Rapids, Michigan, he co-directed, with Aaron B. Smith a short fiction film called ''Sortie'', winner of Compass School for Cinematic Arts 24 Hour Film competition. 22nd Quebec Cinema Awards
The 22nd Quebec Cinema Awards were presented on 10 June 2020, to recognize talent and achievement in the cinema of Quebec. The planned 7 June ceremony was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but nominees were announced 23 April. Abenaki documentary filmmaker Alanis Obomsawin was also selected as the recipient of the Iris Tribute at the unanimous recommendation of Québec Cinéma's Comité de représentation professionnelle. Following the ceremony's cancellation, Québec Cinéma announced that on 10 June, most winners would be announced by webcast by Radio-Canada and ARTV, with the webcast hosted by Élise Guilbault, Guillaume Lambert and Mani Soleymanlou; following this, Jean-Philippe Wauthier hosted his show '' Bonsoir Bonsoir!'' where the winners for Best Film, Best Actor, Best Actress and the Public Prize were announced. The history of cinema in Quebec started on June 27, 1896 when the Frenchman Louis Minier inaugurated the first movie projection in North America in a Montreal theatre room. However, it would have to wait until the 1960s before a genuine Quebec cinema industry would emerge.
