''X-TRA Contemporary Art Journal'' (''X-TRA'') is an independent visual arts journal that focuses on criticism and conversation about contemporary art. ''X-TRA'' was founded in Los Angeles in 1997 by artists Stephen Berens and Ellen Birrell and is published twice a year by the non-profit Project X Foundation for Art and Criticism. The magazine is the longest running art publication in Los Angeles. ''X-TRA'' journal publishes features, reviews, columns, interviews, and artist projects. The artist-driven magazine produces exclusive online content and public programs in addition to its print publication. Human Resources Los Angeles
Human Resources Los Angeles (HRLA) is a non-profit exhibition and performance space located in Chinatown, Los Angeles, Los Angeles's Chinatown dedicated to supporting interdisciplinary, performative and experimental art practices. History Human Resources Los Angeles was founded by siblings Eric and Kathleen Kim in 2010. They were joined by three of their friends Giles Miller, Devin McNulty, and Dawn Kasper with the intent of featuring performance art over traditional static displays. Instead of being organized by a single curator HRLA utilizes a content programming committee, organizing displays through collaboration. The name "human resources" refers to the fact that the gallery is a resource for artists rather than an institutional setting. Shana Lutker
Shana Lutker is an artist currently working and living in Los Angeles, CA. Lutker works in sculpture, installation, performance, and text. Her concepts are often synthesized from historical and theoretical research. Lutker is represented in Los Angeles by Susanne Vielmetter Los Angeles Projects. In addition to solo exhibitions at Vielmetter, LAXART, and Barbara Seiler Galerie, she was included in Performa 13 and the 2014 Whitney Biennial. Art Criticism
Art criticism is the discussion or evaluation of visual art. Art critics usually criticize art in the context of aesthetics or the theory of beauty. A goal of art criticism is the pursuit of a rational basis for art appreciation but it is questionable whether such criticism can transcend prevailing socio-political circumstances. The variety of artistic movements has resulted in a division of art criticism into different disciplines which may each use different criteria for their judgements. The most common division in the field of criticism is between historical criticism and evaluation, a form of art history, and contemporary criticism of work by living artists. Despite perceptions that art criticism is a much lower risk activity than making art, opinions of current art are always liable to drastic corrections with the passage of time. Aria Dean
Aria Dean (born 1993) is an American artist, critic, and curator. Until 2021, Dean served as Curator and Editor of Rhizome (organization), Rhizome. Her writings have appeared in various art publications including ''Artforum'', ''e-flux publications, e-flux'', ''The New Inquiry'', ''Art in America'', and ''Topical Cream''. Contemporary Art Magazines
Contemporary history, in English-language historiography, is a subset of modern history that describes the historical period from approximately 1945 to the present. Contemporary history is either a subset of the late modern period, or it is one of the three major subsets of modern history, alongside the early modern period and the late modern period. In the social sciences, contemporary history is also continuous with, and related to, the rise of postmodernity. Micol Hebron
Micol Hebron (born July 23, 1972) is an American interdisciplinary artist, curator, and associate professor at Chapman University, located in Southern California. Hebron critically examines and employs modes of feminist activism in art. Early life and education Hebron studied theater and visual arts at the University of California, San Diego from 1990 to 1992; and the Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia, Venice, Italy, from 1993 to 1994. Agnès Varda
Agnès Varda (; born Arlette Varda; 30 May 1928 – 29 March 2019) was a Belgian-born French film director, screenwriter, photographer, and artist. LA Convention Center
The Los Angeles Convention Center is a convention center in the southwest section of downtown Los Angeles. It hosts multiple annual conventions and has often been used as a filming location in TV shows and movies. History The convention center, designed by architect Charles Luckman, opened in 1971 and expanded in 1981, 1993 and 1997. It was originally built as a rectangular building, between Pico Boulevard and 11th Street (now Chick Hearn Ct.) on Figueroa Street. The northeast portion of the center was demolished in 1997 to make way for the Staples Center.
