Władysław Zalewski
Władysław Zalewski (21 January 1892 in Warsaw – 25 November 1977 in London) was a Polish aviation engineer, a constructor of aeroplanes and aeroplane engines. Arrested in 1940 by the NKWD he spent 18 months in Soviet camps. He was evacuated to Iraq among Polish soldier of Anders. After 1945 he lived in UK. In the years of 1908–1913 Zalewski constructed biplane WZ I and its 20 hp engine. In 1912 he constructed with his brother Bolesław monoplane WZ II. During the years of 1915–1916 he built two tetraplanes, in which one was flying on the frontline. Zalewski (feminine: Zalewska, plural: Zalewscy) is a Polish-language surname. Alternate spellings include Zelewski, Zaleski, Zeleski, Zalewska, Zalescy and Zaller The form ''Zalewski'' is the hypercorrect form of ''Zaleski''. By analogy with other surnames, like Chotomowski (colloquially pronounced as if spelt "Chotomoski"), Olszewski ("Olszeski") etc., it may seem that the shorter spelling must reflect the popular pronunciation and not the older, etymological one, but this is not the case. The original form ''Zaleski'' was derived from a place called Zalesie or Zalas, which literally means "an area close to a forest, behind a forest". It is difficult to assess which regions were primarily connected with it, because of the significant number of villages by such names. WZ X
The WZ.X was the Polish reconnaissance aircraft designed in the mid-1920s and manufactured in the Centralne Warsztaty Lotnicze (CWL) - Central Aviation Workshops in Warsaw. It was the first combat aircraft of own design built in Poland, in a small series. Development The aircraft was designed by Władysław Zalewski, as his tenth design (Zalewski had already constructed aircraft for the Russian Air Force during the World War I). Work started in 1923, and the first prototype was flown in August 1926. Another airframe was built for static trials. Flight trials were successful: its performance was at least as good as the Breguet 19, and better than the Potez 25. However, maintenance was more difficult.
