Wrestling At The 1908 Summer Olympics
At the 1908 Summer Olympics in London, nine wrestling events were contested, all for men. There were four weight classes in Greco-Roman wrestling and five weight classes in freestyle wrestling. Greco-Roman reappeared for the first time since the 1896 Summer Olympics, with weight classes for the first time. The number of classes in freestyle was reduced from 7 to 5, with the light fly, fly, and welterweight classes dropped but the middleweight added. The addition of the 4 Greco-Roman classes brought the total number of events in wrestling up to 9. Medal summary Freestyle Greco-Roman Participating nations 115 wrestlers from 14 nations competed. 1908 Summer Olympics
The 1908 Summer Olympics (officially the Games of the IV Olympiad and also known as London 1908) were an international multi-sport event held in London, England, United Kingdom, from 27 April to 31 October 1908. The 1908 Games were originally scheduled to be held in Rome, but were relocated on financial grounds following the violent eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 1906, which claimed over 100 lives; Rome eventually hosted the Games in 1960. These were the fourth chronological modern Summer Olympics in keeping with the now-accepted four-year cycle as opposed to the alternate four-year cycle of the proposed Intercalated Games. The IOC president for these Games was Baron Pierre de Coubertin. Lasting a total of 187 days (or six months and four days), these Games were the longest in modern Olympics history. Yrjö Saarela
Yrjö Erik Mikael Saarela (13 July 1884 – 30 June 1951) was a Finnish wrestler, who won an Olympic gold and a world championship. Wrestling Saarela began wrestling in 1906, coached by Carl Allén. By 1908 he was a well-established wrestler and was nominated into the Finnish Olympic team without trials. He won silver at the 1908 Olympics, which was a single-elimination tournament: According to rumours, Weckman bribed Saarela to throw the final. Verner Weckman
Johan Verner Weckman (26 July 1882 – 22 February 1968) was a wrestler, who is the first Finnish Olympic gold medalist. Wrestling He was inspired to take up wrestling at the age of 15. He joined the club Helsingfors Gymnastikklubben in 1902, then moved to Helsingin Atleettiklubi in 1903. He won the Finnish national Greco-Roman heavyweight championship in 1904. Then he moved to Germany, where he joined the club Germania Karlsruhe. He won the unofficial Greco-Roman heavyweight world title in Duisburg in 1905. Weckman was the initiating force behind Finland sending a team to the 1906 Intercalated Games. He was being pressured by the German Imperial committee for Olympic Games to change citizenship and to join the German team, but Weckman insisted on representing Finland. Arvo Leander Lindén, later Linko (27 February 1887 – 18 March 1941) was a Finnish wrestler, who won an Olympic bronze medal in Greco-Roman wrestling in 1908. Wrestling Lindén began wrestling at the age of eleven, and competitively in 1904, when he won the Häme Province lightweight championship. He won Finnish wrestling championship in Greco-Roman under 60 kg class in 1908.
