George Mehnert
George Nicholas Mehnert (November 3, 1881 – July 8, 1948) was an American Amateur wrestling, wrestler who competed in the 1904 Summer Olympics and 1908 Summer Olympics. He was born in Newark, New Jersey. At the 1904 Olympics, he won a gold medal in flyweight category. Four years later at the 1908 Olympics, he won a gold medal in freestyle bantamweight category. By winning the gold medal in 1908, Mehnert became the first American to win two Olympic gold medals in wrestling. In 1976, Mehnert was inducted into the inaugural class of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and Museum, National Wrestling Hall of Fame as a Distinguished Member. Wrestling At The 1948 Summer Olympics – Men's Freestyle Flyweight
The men's freestyle flyweight competition at the 1948 Summer Olympics in London took place from 29 July to 31 July at the Earls Court Exhibition Centre, Empress Hall, Earls Court Exhibition Centre. Nations were limited to one competitor. This freestyle wrestling competition continued to use the "bad points" elimination system introduced at the 1928 Summer Olympics for Greco-Roman and at the 1932 Summer Olympics for freestyle wrestling, with the slight modification introduced in 1936. Each round featured all wrestlers pairing off and wrestling one bout (with one wrestler having a bye if there were an odd number). The loser received 3 points if the loss was by fall or unanimous decision and 2 points if the decision was 2-1 (this was the modification from prior years, where all losses were 3 points). Freestyle wrestling is a style of wrestling originated from Great Britain and the United States. Along with Greco-Roman, it is one of the two styles of wrestling contested in the Olympic Games. American high school and men's college wrestling is conducted under different rules and is termed scholastic and collegiate wrestling. American collegiate women's wrestling is conducted under freestyle rules. Freestyle wrestling, like collegiate wrestling, has its greatest origins in catch-as-catch-can wrestling. In both styles the ultimate goal is to throw and pin the opponent to the mat, which results in an immediate win. Unlike Greco-Roman, freestyle and collegiate wrestling allow the use of the wrestler's or the opponent's legs in offense and defense. The 1904 Summer Olympics (officially the Games of the III Olympiad and also known as St. Louis 1904) were an international multi-sport event held in St. Louis, Missouri, United States, from 29 August to 3 September 1904, as part of an extended sports program lasting from 1 July to 23 November 1904, located at what is now known as Francis Field on the campus of Washington University in St. Louis. This was the first time that the Olympic Games were held outside Europe.
