Wotherspoon is a surname first recorded in the 13th century with its origins in England and Scotland. History The history of the surname Wotherspoon reveals a divergent roster of spellings over the centuries. Today only a handful of variants survive including Weatherspoon, Wetherspoon, Wedderspoon and Witherspoon. The first written record appeared in the 13th century during the reign of Queen Margaret of Norway, who ruled over Scotland from 1286 to 1290. David Wallace Wotherspoon (born 16 January 1990) is a professional soccer player who plays as a midfielder for Scottish Premiership club St Johnstone, and the Canada national team. Wotherspoon started his career with Hibernian. Born in Scotland, he represented his nation of birth at youth international levels, up to and including the under-21 level, before switching to Canada in 2018. Jeremy Lee Wotherspoon (born October 26, 1976) is a Canadian speed skater, widely recognized as one of the greatest speedskating sprinters of all time. In December 2003, Wotherspoon became the most successful male skater in World Cup history when he claimed the 49th victory of his career. He finished his career with a record 67 World Cup wins at 500 and 1,000 metres. Wotherspoon broke the 500 m world record on three occasions. He broke the 1000 m world record seven times. William Wallace Wotherspoon (November 16, 1850 – October 21, 1921) was a United States Army general who served as Chief of Staff of the United States Army in 1914. Early life Wotherspoon was born in Washington, D.C., on November 16, 1850, the son of Army surgeon Alexander Summerville Wotherspoon (1817–1884) and Louisa Kuhn Wotherspoon. Alexander Wotherspoon was a veteran of the Mexican War; in addition to serving on Winfield Scott's staff, he was present when President Zachary Taylor became ill in 1850, and treated Taylor during his final illness. Trent Wotherspoon is a Canadian politician and former interim leader of the Saskatchewan New Democratic Party (NDP). He was elected to represent the electoral district of Regina Rosemont in the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan in the 2007 election, and was re-elected in the 2011 election, and 2016 election. Wotherspoon was a candidate for the party's leadership in 2013. William Wotherspoon (2 May 1868 – 19 August 1942) was a Scottish rugby union half-back who was a member of the first official British Isles tour and was also capped for the Scotland team. Wotherspoon played one game in the 1891 Championship, which saw Scotland win all three matches making Wotherspoon a Triple Crown winning player. Personal history Wotherspoon was born in Aberdour, Fife in 1868 to Charles Grey Wotherspoon, a barrister of Aberdour. William Wallace Wotherspoon (1821 – Oct. 11, 1888) was an American landscape painter who is known for his paintings of New Hampshire's White Mountains. Biography William Wallace Wotherspoon was born in New York City in 1821. Not much is known about his family or education, apart from the fact that his father was a merchant and he took over the business when his father died. He attended the National Academy of Design in the early 1840s and frequently exhibited paintings there over the next four decades. Beginning in 1846, he spent several years traveling around Europe for further informal study of art, much of it in Rome. Paintings from this period of Lake Nemi and ancient Roman ruins were praised by critics. On his return to the United States, Wotherspoon was elected an associate member of the National Academy of Design, and he became a founding member of the Artists' Fund.
