One third of Worthing Borough Council in Worthing, West Sussex, England is elected each year, followed by one year without election. Since the last boundary changes in 2003, 37 councillors are elected from 13 wards. Worthing Borough Council
Worthing Borough Council is a district council in the county of West Sussex, based in the borough of Worthing. The borough council was created in 1974 under the Local Government Act 1972 out of the existing Worthing Municipal Council, which also had borough status. It forms the lower tier of local government in Worthing, responsible for local services such as housing, planning, leisure and tourism. Since 2014 it has been a constituent council of the Greater Brighton City Region. It is composed of 37 councillors, three for each of 11 electoral wards and two each for the electoral wards of Durrington and Northbrook wards. The council is currently led by the Labour Party, who have 23 councillors; the opposition consists of 13 Conservative councillors, and one Liberal Democrat councillorDr Catherine Howeis the chief executive. 2008 Worthing Borough Council Election
The 2008 Worthing Borough Council election took place on 1 May 2008 to elect members of Worthing Borough Council in West Sussex, England. One third of the council was up for election and the Conservative Party stayed in overall control of the council. Overall turnout was 35%. Candidates from five political parties took part in the election from the Conservatives, Liberal Democrats, British National Party, Labour and United Kingdom Independence Party and one candidate standing on a "Stop! Durrington's Overdevelopment – Save Titnore's Trees" platform. The results of the election were declared at a joint count with Adur council, the first time such a joint count had taken place in West Sussex. The count saw an incident where one candidate, Dawn Smith, was arrested after some of her supporters were prevented from entering the count. 2007 Worthing Borough Council Election
The 2007 Worthing Borough Council election took place on 3 May 2007 to elect members of Worthing Borough Council in West Sussex, England. One third of the council was up for election and the Conservative Party stayed in overall control of the council. Candidates from the Conservatives, Liberal Democrats, Green Party, Labour and the United Kingdom Independence Party stood in the election. There was also one candidate, Dawn Smith, standing as a "Stop Durrington's Overdevelopment - Save Titnore's Trees" candidate as a protest against plans to build 875 houses near Worthing. The Liberal Democrats had been hoping to gain three seats, but the results saw the Conservatives gain one seat from the Liberal Democrats to strengthen their majority on the council. 2006 Worthing Borough Council Election
The 2006 Worthing Borough Council election took place on 4 May 2006 to elect members of Worthing Borough Council in West Sussex, England. One third of the council was up for election and the Conservative Party stayed in overall control of the council. The results saw the Conservatives suffer a net loss of three seats to the Liberal Democrats although they remained in control of the council. The Liberal Democrats gained a seat in Gaisford and Northbrook wards and both seats in Durrington, with the winner in Northbrook, Diane Jones, becoming the youngest female councillor in Worthing at the age of 22. However the Conservatives narrowly gained a seat back in Central ward. The 2004 Worthing Borough Council election took place on 10 June 2004 to elect members of Worthing Borough Council in West Sussex, England. The whole council was up for election with boundary changes since the last election 2003 increasing the number of seats by 1. The Conservative Party gained overall control of the council from no overall control. Overall turnout was 38.23%. The campaign saw a debate between the two main parties on the council over development in Worthing and the fate of the local swimming pool Aquarina. The results saw the Conservatives make significant gains from the Liberal Democrats to take power in Worthing. The top Liberal Democrat to lose in the election was the leader of the council, Sheila Player, who came fourth in Selden ward and failed to be elected as a result. The 2003 Worthing Borough Council election took place on 1 May 2003 to elect members of Worthing Borough Council in West Sussex, England. One third of the council was up for election and the Liberal Democrats lost overall control of the council to no overall control. Overall turnout was 28.61%. The 2002 Worthing Borough Council election took place on 2 May 2002 to elect members of Worthing Borough Council in West Sussex, England. One third of the council was up for election and the Liberal Democrats gained overall control of the council from the Conservative Party. Overall turnout was 30.67%. After the previous election in 2000 the Conservatives had controlled the council with 20 seats compared to the Liberal Democrats 16. 12 seats were up for election in 2002 with the Liberal Democrats needing to gain 2 seats to make Worthing a hung council. Issues in the election included litter, the introduction of palm trees on the seafront and a recent 10.3% increase in council tax. The 1999 Worthing Borough Council election took place on 6 May 1999 to elect members of Worthing Borough Council in West Sussex, England.
