''Worldbroken'' is a live album by post-hardcore band Saccharine Trust, released in 1985 through SST. The album was recorded live and completely improvised. Mike Watt of Minutemen stepped in to play bass for the 1985 show. ''Worldbroken'' received critical praise and was an influence on Unknown Instructors' first album ''The Way Things Work'' Double bassist Damon Smith, who appeared on the ''Grizzly Man'' soundtrack, has credited the album with altering his views on punk rock, jazz, and free-form jamming. Saccharine Trust
Saccharine Trust is an American punk rock band from Los Angeles, California, formed in 1980 by singer Jack Brewer and guitarist Joe Baiza. The band would frequently perform with SST labelmates Minutemen and Black Flag. However, Baiza described Saccharine Trust as the "black sheep" of the SST roster. Drummer Rob Holzman appeared on their 1981 debut '' Paganicons'' but left the band to play in Slovenly, replaced by drummer Tony Cicero. After a ten-year hiatus circa 1986 to 1996, the band re-formed and began performing around the West Coast. Baiza describes the band's sound as "poetry music" or "mini-theater." Surviving You, Always
''Surviving You, Always'' is the second album and first LP by post-hardcore band Saccharine Trust, released in 1984 through SST. Guitarist Joe Baiza was exploring Jazz at the time at the influence was reflected on the album. Much of the lyrical content contains biblical imagery. The album features a cover of "Peace Frog" by The Doors a song repeated on Saccharine Trust's live compilation ''Past Lives''. The cover is based on the photo by photography student Robert Wiles of Evelyn McHale, who committed suicide by jumping from the 86th floor Observation Deck of the Empire State Building on May 1, 1947. Joe Baiza
Joe Baiza (born January 11, 1952) is a punk rock and jazz guitarist whom Eugene Chadbourne cites as one of the most noteworthy guitarists to emerge from the Southern California punk rock milieu. Career Baiza is a founding member of the bands Saccharine Trust, Universal Congress Of, and The Mecolodiacs. He also performed guest guitar spots on several Minutemen tracks and played alongside Black Flag's Greg Ginn and Chuck Dukowski in the SST all-star jam band October Faction, recording two albums with them. Baiza was also part of the musical side project Nastassya Filippovna which featured Bob Lee (drums), Devin Sarno (bass) and Mike Watt (bass). He substituted for Nels Cline during Mike Watt's European and American tours behind his second solo album, ''Contemplating the Engine Room'', in 1997 and 1998. Damon Smith
Damon Smith (born October 17, 1972) is an American free improvising bassist. He has worked with Cecil Taylor, Peter Brötzmann, Marshall Allen, John Tchicai, Elliott Sharp, Chris Cutler, Fred Frith, Jim O'Rourke etc. Biography Smith spent his childhood in eastern Washington but moved to Oakland in the mid-1980s. He took up bass in his late teens, inspired by the Minutemen's Mike Watt. His love of Minutemen got him to explore other bands on the SST Records label which led to his discovery of Henry Kaiser, Elliott Sharp and Saccharine Trust. Smith credited Saccharine Trust's improvised live album '' Worldbroken'' with altering his views on punk rock, jazz, and free-form jamming. The Way Things Work (album)
''The Way Things Work'' is the debut album by American improvisational band Unknown Instructors, featuring Mike Watt (Minutemen, fIREHOSE, The Stooges, Dos, Banyan), George Hurley (Minutemen, Firehose, Red Krayola), Joe Baiza (Saccharine Trust, Universal Congress Of), Jack Brewer (Saccharine Trust), and poet Dan McGuire. The album was created and recorded on the spot in one day in 2003 at Karma Studio in San Pedro, California. Watt would record his third solo album '' The Secondman's Middle Stand'' in the same studio five months later. McGuire credited the Saccharine Trust album ''Worldbroken'' as an influence saying he wanted to use it "as a template for that first album." The album has been compared to Captain Beefheart's classic '' Trout Mask Replica''. Joe Carducci
Joe Carducci is an American writer, record producer, and former A&R executive, formerly most closely associated with the influential record label SST Records. Carducci lived for a time in Chicago before moving to Hollywood in 1976. From 1981 to 1986 he was an A&R man, record producer, and co-owner of SST Records, working with, among other bands, the Minutemen, Saint Vitus, the Meat Puppets, Black Flag and Saccharine Trust. He also ran his own record label, Thermidor Records, which released albums by The Birthday Party, the Minutemen, Oil Tasters, Flipper, Nig Heist, SPK and Al Jourgensen's pre-Ministry band Special Affect. He wrote lyrics for the song "Jesus & Tequila" by the Minutemen (''Double Nickels on the Dime'', 1984) and "Chinese Firedrill" from Mike Watt's 1995 solo album ''Ball-Hog or Tugboat?''.
